I was able to catch an early screening of Lord of War starring Nicholas Cage, which is due out later this week. LOW follows the exploits of an international arms dealer (Cage), and is based upon true events. Without giving anything away; it is a well done, well written, movie that designed to play to a grown up audience. If you are looking for silly car chases, Terminator styled superheros, blood, gore, gratuitous sex, and a fluffy dog, then this movie is not for you. This is more like a blending of the guilt ridden rags to riches story of Al Pachino's Scarface; combined, with plenty of the dark seductive humor of American Beauty.

You may be tempted to write this off as a typical leftish Hollywood condemnation of war mongering; but, it doesn't quite stop there. It equally shows the silly irrational downside and hypocracy of emotionally driven idealism. The characters are straight forward and charismatic; whatever, dark or convoluted inner conflict there is to wrangle with, it is created within the audience rather then the characters. You are the one who will have a hard time deciding which point of view merits a white hat, a black hat, or a dunce cap. From the opening sequence, this is a film that will lure you in, and have you laughing out loud, just before it smacks all the harder with a sharp return to reality.

A fun and interesting experience, for those who are looking for entertainment that goes beyond the mono-syllabic utterings of the usual summer fare. If you liked Cage in Matchstick Men, you will probably like him here.

I love the line in the trailers, "there is 1 gun for every 12 people in the world, question is, how do we arm the other 11".

Well, if you say it's not a lefty i-hate-the-military movie like Buffalo Soldiers was, I might go see it.

Appreciate the review. May actually see it. Unfortunately, I prefer really intellectual movies. I'll try to describe them for you: lots of guns, swords are a plus, REALLY BIG gasoline explosions, gratuitous sex, with lots of female flesh revealed. Kind of what n2s was saying this movie wasn't. Except the fluffy dog.

I am looking forward to this movie, as well as the new one starring Viggo Mortensen as a coffee shop owner/vigilante. It was either Brothers Grimm or Lord of War this weekend, I think I'll go with Lord of War.
