Movie Thread

I'm kinda stoked about "Slither". FINALLY, there is a film maker that is getting back to real horror roots. Not watered down crap that is rated PG-13 so that they can rake in the money and leave real fans of the genre out in the cold.

Brought to you by the same guys that did the matrix movies.

Stars some Talent: Stephen Rea, Natalie Portman; Hugo Weaving

Apparently based in a world with a totalitarian England, after a world war won by the Germans. Basically it appears to be a story about revenge.

Did I mention Natalie Portman?

I'm not a fan of the Matrix movies, but I sure approve of the horror field and other 'cheese' tastes. You can't call it Man's finest, (or maybe you can!) but it's a downright fantastic expression- because it's fun.

SF, Fantasy and Horror. Love them. If there's a breakthrough horror movie I want to see it.

!!! OK.

Seems like those are the two main walls of Horror movies- either go campy and funny, or attempt seriousness.

Firstly, "V for Vendetta" is less horror than alternate world science fiction of a very dystopic nature. Think George Orwell's 1984 rather than Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Secondly, the author of the graphic novels upon which it is based has an excellent record for that sort of thing. he also wrote "The Watchmen", "The Swamp Thing", and "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vols. I & II" I should think that. if the film does justice to his work, it should be a good movie. I hope that they do better than the film version of "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen." They certainly could not do much worse at screwing it up.

FullerH- glad to know we have a knowledgable fellow around. The HI Cantina has always amazed me with all the different talents we bring to the table.

Are you into comic books too?

munk

Yeah that was my mistake for muddying the waters by not explaining that I am 1) looking forward to "V" as a great graphic novel addaptation and 2) Looking forward to "Slither" a horror movie that is coming out around the same time unless they have changed the dates...again:rolleyes:
Revenge always make for a great movie that has it's roots in comic books. One thing that transends from ink to film is the notion that we have the ultimate option of taking justice into our own hands when truely wronged. "V" should be a pretty good ride, i think.
"Slither" on the other hand is going to be a lot of fun. They are not making a teeny-bopper movie that makes already excitable 13 year old girls pee their pants. It's supposed to be a kind of campy, gory, fun little romp that has its ties to Sam Rami's "Evil Dead" movies, as well as some of the fun of the "Re-animator" movies. Heck, the trailer even shows what i think is a wink and nod to the 1983 killer space worm flick "The Deadly Swarm" formerly known as "Revenge of the Aliens" (Yeah, they whored in on "Alien"'s name as "Aliens" had not come out yet and the space worms we eyeless and kind of looked like Geiger's Alien).
Anyway, it's going to be a fun movie. The online trailer was fun. It had a slogan something like: "Nightmare on Elm St.", "Friday the 13th", "Halloween". They all had one thing in common. They were all for *kittie cats*;) Should be funny, gory, and probably offer a few jumps.

V for Vendetta looks good. Very good.
Looking forward to that one, too. The guy with the mask seems VERY good with his knives. Knives! Hey, maybe we should move this thread to the... never mind.

I'm sorry, but I think that the film screwed up the John Constantine character or, perhaps, followed the later versions of him. I MUCH preferred the Garth Ennis version in the early ones. A did not like the Brian Azzarello version. Now, a good movie made from one of the Garth Ennis graphics would be great! How about Adventures of the Rifle Brigade or The Pro?
That latter would likely have to be at least an NC-17 rating. Here we go, how about "The Preacher" series? Or Bloody Mary? As you can tell, I like his cock-eyed sense of humor.:)

A couple of other movies that I might recommend to you all are:
1) "The Duellists" with Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel, directed by Ridley Scott before he got so filled with political correctness and Hollywoodishness.
2) "The Bridge", "The powerful true story of seven boys who defend a bridge to their hometown against U.S. forces. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. DVD has dubed and subtitled tracks on one disc" according to http://www.warshows.com/. I will tell you just how powerful this film is. I first went to see it during the summer of 1961 at a theater across from Fort Myer, the base for the Army's 3rd Infantry Regiment. The theater was full of GIs from the 3rd, including a number of NCOs old enough to have been WWII veterans and when the German kids took out an American Sherman tank with a Panzerfaust, the people in that theater cheered! I was one of them. We all came out later, looking at one another guiltily, but cheer we had. This film is NOT pro-NAZI, it is pro-human and anti-war, profoundly anti-war, not surprising since it was made in West Germany in the late 1950s.

The more that I think about it, I really would like to see a movie made of Garth Ennis' "The Pro". :D They made one out of "Fritz the Cat," after all.
