Moving the clip on a Spec Bump?

Does anyone know if it's possible to move the pocket clip on a Spec Bump? I really like the looks of the knife, but want to turn my knife into a left handed knife. Is this something I could do on my own, or is there someone out there that's known for being good at doing this?

Didn't see your post. I am not familar with the knife you have so I don't know its construction.

If the handles are stainless most likely it is hardened beyond getting a small 2-56 size threader to do anything but break off in the hole. However I have had some success on the thicker ones by drilling the first hole the size I need to thread (number 48 drill) and then following up with a bigger diameter #44 drill behind the smaller hole. (coming from the inside of the handle so the threads are up by the clip.) If the handle was say .125 thick I'd drill down with the bigger drill to where all that was left of the smaller size hole was the last .030 or .020 of the thickness, roughly just a little bit less than the pocket clip thickness that I'd thread. Just enough to get some threads in it to hold the clip which doesn't take much..

If titanium or aluminum is the material the handle scales are made of it can be drilled and threaded for a reposition of the pocket clip for your left hand.

Thanks for the reply! The Spec Bump is made from G10. I haven't even actually bought it yet, as I'm still on the fence over this pocket clip issue. I do like just about everything else about the knife, so if it's something that can be done aftermarket, then I'm willing to give it a shot.

It's constructed with G-10 scales over steel liners, pretty standard. Maybe you're thinking of the all-titanium handles of the original Bump?

Anyhow, I'm betting the liners are hardened.

If the G10 comes off the steel liners. (because I'm sure if a magnet sticks to the liners that they are steel and most are of something like 410 stainless that has a max hardness of like 45 Rc)

Then what can be done is this. You drill a couple of #48 or #51 holes in a thin sheet of titanium (something like .030 or close to that) Then you thread those two holes for 2-56 screws. Then using a small drill bit about 3/16 diameter draw a circle around the holes and cut them out so that in the end you have two little semi circular predrilled and threaded washers you can use as backing plates. You can also do this by purchasing a pre made thumb stud from a knife supply and simply cutting off a thin piece with a thin cut off disc from Sears. Either way you end up with two or three threaded backing plates.

Take off the G10 scale you want to mount the clip to and mark and drill the holes. Also I'd thread those too for added grip. Then flip the scale over and using the 3/16 drill you used to make your washers circle outline drill a couple of shallow holes big enough for your plates to sit in recessed like and inlay so as to not interfere with letting the scale sit flat on the liner and screw the clip on using those backing plates to hold it in place. After they are seated and tight you might even want to dab a drop of super glue gel in any gaps in them where they fit to make it so you can get the clip on and off without having to take the scale off again. The glue will help to hold the washer still so that the hole thing doesn't move when you turn a screw.

Then put your scale back on and you have a fairly well secured clip.

Please note that the G-10 under the clip is not final contoured or finished like the rest of the knife. It will take some extra work to make it look good when moving the clip.

I wanted to remove the clip for pouch carry but decided against it when I saw what was under it.

I imagine one could use the original clip to trace out a pattern to cut a new plate to stick in the old position where the original clip was mounted.

Looking at that knife I think I'd be inclined to cut the clip that came with the knife off so that all that was left was the plate that mounts to the position you are talking about. This way that unfinished area will always be covered by that plate.

Then I would make a custom clip for it for the other side or buy one from knifekits.com and mount it on the other side for left hand carry using new 2-56 screws and doing the mounting as described above.

I'll look tonight. I'm thinking of my smallest torx, but you've probably had the same idea,
