Specifically, it looks like I'm going to stay in the West Hollywood area. No offense meant to anyone, but I'm finding out that this area is heavily populated by the gay community. Not that it matters to me. As far as I'm concerned, that just means that I don't have to be concerned about as many guys harrassing my girlfriend. I'm just looking to find out about the area. Anyone got any tips, advice for me? My girlfriend will be pursuing her goals in acting/dancing and I'm looking to compete in MMA. I'm going to be mostly business there, but will definitely take advantage of the area and explore. What can you tell me about this area?

There are places for MMA but the intense ones with reputable instruction you'll have to look for a little (Probably not in West Hollywood but close). It can be pretty crowded and parking can be a bitch but there are things to do and places to go nearby at night in surounding area.

My wife and I live in West Hollywood, just off Santa Monica and La Cienega. It is a nice, safe neighborhood. Rents have been skyrocketing lately due to the housing market downturn. The Grove Farmers Market is a nice place for dinner + a movie. There is good sushi to be had in the neighborhood as well. I work on the sunset strip and can't say that i am a fan. There are a lot of good live music options though at the whiskey, the troubador, the roxxy, house of blues etc etc.

For your MMA aspirations as you probably know there are a ton of options. I recently joined Hollywood Brazillian Jiu Jitsu after being away from bjj for about 1.5 years -- its a renzo gracie school. I like it a lot. Check out sherdog.net for other schools.... There are a lot of options for bjj, muy thai, mma etc.

Thanks for the input guys. For MMA, I'm seriously looking at Legends in West Hollywood. My understanding is that Eddie Bravo teaches BJJ and Karo Parisan teaches MMA over there. Hefty membership fee though.

Bammann,

What don't you like about the Sunset strip? Looking at the rent rates, it doesn't seem as bad as up here in the Bay Area. The rentals I'm looking at are cheaper over there.

I'm hearing a lot about the traffic, do a lot of people bike around or is it mostly drivers over there?

Lots of martial arts options in LA, you'll love it. There's a Gracie studio there, as well as the Inosanto Academy in the Valley, a couple of good capoeira schools, and I think there's even a Krav Maga place there. Great location if you're looking to expand your repertoire.

Enjoy the food. LA has a lot of great eating places. Check out Versailles, it's a nice Cuban restaurant in the Palms/Culver City area.

The rents are definitely lower than they Bay Area if that's your price point.
Not many people bike in LA as traffic is pretty bad and drivers are unaccustomed to sharing with bikes. There are decent bus routes but pretty limited train options. I like to walk.

The strip isn't to bad live near if you like going out to clubs and swank bars. If you are more into neighborhood places then its not the best area to live in as there are few other options. For more upscale drinks in the area I like the bar at the Standard and Chateau Marmont.

A few restaurants I like:

Yoshi's Sushi -- great hole in the wall sushi place on SM
Joey's Cafe -- healthy american food on SM
Barney's Beanery -- neighborhood institution -- good place to watch games, grab a beer
Frankie and Johnny's -- on sunset -- decent slices for being LA
Palms Thai -- A drive to thai town - my favorite thai food in LA, plus there is a Elvis impersonator to boot....

If you like to shoot the Firing Line in Burbank and LAX Range are the closest places to West Hollywood.

One other consideration when apartment looking is to check it out at night.
As you go east along Santa Monica towards Hollywood there are some not so nice areas to live in with decent sounding addresses...

Check out Versailles, it's a nice Cuban restaurant in the Palms/Culver City area.

WORD!

I grew up in Culver City.

Also, Johnny's Pastrami on Sepulveda Blvd at Washington place. You will NOT be dissappointed or hungry when you leave.
