Mower blade steel?

The maintenance shop in the town where I work is replacing old blades on the commercial mowers. Does anyone know anything about the steel used in these? I would guess it would have to be pretty tough.

Somebody that worked in that business mentioned they were made of 15xx steel. Commercial mowers may have something different

They usually make a pretty good blade, but many here will tell you that the unknown factor alone would make buying brand new steel of known type worthwhile. Save yourself the aggravation and time and buy new steel.

Thanks for the input all. I have PILES of the new steel - 440C - ATS34 - S30V and a variety of damascus. I just wanted to try a few novelty blades - maybe some W1 from an old file - I have a chunk of 5160 from the spring shop - and I have a bar of O1 on the way too. I like this road - and the side trips are kind of fun too!:)

The primary criteria for mower blades is impact resistance so they don't break when they hit something hard....Best steel for this ..Mild steel.
