Just starting to look around so I figured I'd see if anybody has a recommendation. Looking to pick up a MP3 player for my GF from x-mas but there are a couple key contraints.
- Cost (not on a specific budget, but I am in school and working in a bicycle shop, in michigan, in the winter!)
- Ease of use. She's not exactly a techno-wiz.
- Durability. See above note, extropolate.

I've been using a Sandisk Sansa Express for about a year and half now. Normally works good, but once in a while you have to play with it. Seems o be mostly software related as I've found a lot of negative feedback online. Probably want to avoi this for her. Obviously the Ipods are an options, although the cost seems a bit high... Still though, definately a good product and easy to use.

Oh, and for the record, anybody who likes an effective "shuffle" mode, avoid the Sansa Express!

I have 2 Sansa Clip's and a Sansa Fuze and I recommend either model.
One of my Clip's is used all day (or night) plugged into a radio in a semi-truck and it has never failed with rough rides or handling. Simple to operate but I agree the shuffle isn't what it should be.

I am a big fan of the Creative Zen. It is has many features given the price point and all of them are easy and intuitive to use. Compressing and converting video is a straight forward process. I am exceptionally pleased with mine.

As far as I'm concerned you can't go wrong with an iPod of any variety.

I was wary of them for a while, and felt dirty for buying an Apple product. But I have to say it's the best $200 I've ever spent, and my second generation Nano is still going strong after three years.

They're easy to use, easy to add and delete files from, and they plug into a large variety of car interfaces (I run mine through an Alpine headunit that controls just like the click wheel does).

After three years, I can't see myself without an iPod.

Sansa clips are great. I caught mine on sale for $39.00 for 2 gig.

I've had a Sony MP3 player for a while now. Pretty reliable, the interface is idiot-proof and it lasts a long time on a charge. I bought it because it was cheaper then the iPods and it has a radio, which the nanos didn't have at the time. I think the model I have has now been replaced by the E344.

I've been looking at getting my self an MP3 player and have my eye on the Sansa Clip or Fuze. They are what I normally recommend to friends that are looking for something nice, small and affordible. I use Winamp and Windows Media Player to play all of my audio and video files and the Sansa MP3 players work with them nicely.

 Flawless with WMP. I have the 8gig Fuze and absolutely love it. Never any issue with it.

+1

A Nano will run you 149$ USD + Tax and chances are your going to lov...er...your girlfriend will love it.

I also use a iPod Shuffle which is a bit less at 35-75$ USD + Tax. I have a last gen shuffle and I love it for running and just as its the size of a quarter I can toss it into a pocket or my kit and never really need to worry about weight. Its weighs less then the loose change I carry so I enjoy being able to keep a few hours worth of music with me and not be weighed down.

another iPod lover. Our household has 4 iPods and because we love them and iTunes so much, recently added 3 iPhones. The software makes Apple products superior in my opinion. They are also very well designed and simple to use.

I have a Zen and love it! Very affordable and easy to use.

Pulled the trigger on a Sansa Fuze. Not sure if it was the best move, but we'll see. Some good reviews online, and supposed to have fairly decent sound quality. Thanks for all the great suggestions, though! It was a tough choice between that an a Zen Mosaic...

I'd get her a knife.

And a flashlight!

My wife had iPods for years and then switched over to a Zune. $15/month gets you all the music you want, plus you own 10 songs per month that don't go away if you stop paying the subscription fees. Wireless sync, FM tuner, great screen, and lots of other good features make the Zune a good bet.

Go with a Cowon D2+. It has 16 GB of built in memory and an SDHC card slot for up to 32 GB of memory expansion.

Make sure to pair that Fuze with some good library management software. I recommend and only use Media Monkey.
