MP3 Players

Been looking for a MP3 player, one that also has a FM tuner and at least 2 gig of memory. Price is not that important. I do not like the IPOD's though. Any good suggestions?

Just bought a Creative MuVo V200 1GB MP3 player for my wife and it works great! Direct USB2 connection to your computer (no cable required),relatively small and lightweigh, FM tuner and uses a AAA cell.

I'm not sure if there's any flash-memory MP3 player with capacity larger than 1 GB. The 2GB ones that we came across in Singapore are all hard-disk based. Trust me, you don't want to go jogging with those. Don't know what the manufacturers claimed, but based on personal experiece, those players are not meant to take shocks (minor/major long-term vibrations, i.e. jogging, cars). Our last one lasted about 4 months before errors appeared.

Flash-memory players are mucher cheaper, tougher and energy (read: battery) efficient in my opinion.

Ive seen a few of the iriver products and been quite impressed. In fact I bought my g/f one of the smaller 256mb models.

Another thing to consider is the file formats they will play. Most play mp3 but some people prefer wma, and ogg is becoming more popular too...not all players will play ogg's

Sony

They've come out with new ones to compete with the ipods. They won't be 2gb since i think they only go up to 1gb on flash players now like someone else said above. However they have got awesome battery life. The ones using AAA batteries will go up to 70 hours!!!!!!. How awesome is that. Although i think a more realistic figure would be about 60 hours. Not sure if they have a built in tuner for that one or not.

For the smaller ones they're the size of a cigarette lighter and they do have built in fm tuners. Battery life is quoted at 50 hours so expect maybe 40 hours. Super fast recharge time as well. 3 minute recharge=3 hours playback.

I've always wanted an mp3 player but i've been trying to avoid buying any apple product. These new sony's look promising.

Or you could go Creative. They're quite good too.

Got a Creative Zen Micro, with 5GB of storage. It's nice. They retail for $230 now. You can get better deals online or in the weekly ads.

I just picked up a Philips Micro Jukebox for my wife the other day. She loves its size, capacity, and FM tuner. I got it at BJ's Wholesale for $159.00.

Funny you mention that one, I just walked a bit ago with the 2 gig version at about $179 bucks, so far I like it, just now trying to figure out how to organize stuff on it but I do like the size of it and the capicity.

What I can not figure out is how this little thing gets better FM reception than my truck stereo :(.

I had the 2 gig Philips for a couple weeks and loved it...... until it died. Unlike the Ipod, the Philips hard drive constantly spins as music is played, instead of reading ahead and caching the songs to memory. A very short drop to a carpet, from the seated position, was enough to crash the head and destroy the hard drive. Ugh. I'll never buy another hard drive based MP3 players again, that isn't a real Ipod.

If I were after something with built-in FM, I'd be looking hard at the latest flash memory IRiver products. They may only go up to 1 gig, but flash players don't suffer from head crashes, and have unbelievable battery lives. My wife has an Iriver, and the FM reception is MUCH better than a couple other FM/MP3 players I’ve tried. And the sound quality of its internal amplifier puts most MP3 players, including my Ipod, to shame.

Showing my technological ignorance here (my receptionist just had to walk me through sending a fax) but how many songs is 1gig?

The short answer, for the average Joe, is about 250 songs. The long answer, for audiophiles, is MUCH longer than I want to get into.

Thanks. The short answer is perfect for me. When it comes to music technology, I'm a below average joe.

You could get about 14 albums ripped at high quality in 1gb. This is at almost CD-like quality where you can barely tell the difference. However, like Buzzbait said, for the average joe just listening whilst exercising you could rip at a slightly lower quality and get 250 songs easily.

I'm thinking 1gb is enough for most purposes. Some people have 40gb players but i wonder how many songs they get to listen to from all that. I guess if you really love music you probably have 1000+ favourite songs to listen to.

Iriver is also a good brand to look at. Quite quality stuff. However what i find annoying is that the ipod has so many more accesories. I've seen car audio systems that accepts ipod connection but not other brands. Wish they would make a USB connector on car stereos that'd allow it to connect to any mp3 player and play from it.

I've got about 350 songs on my Ipod Mini, using about 1.4 gig, but never listen to many of them. I could easily live with 1 gig of music.

that olympus one i saw a add in the superbowl, dont know if it ever came out. what about the satilite ones?

The iAudio 5 and the iAudio G3 are both available in 2 GB-versions; the only flash players at that capacity that I know of. I have no personal experience with them, but they seem to be pretty popular on audio forums like head-fi.org.

I just got my iRiver H10 today. 5GB, color screen, FM tuner, voice record, tuner record, jpeg viewer.....I love it. Already every Metallica and Alice In Chains CD I had. Tomorrow Iron Maiden and the rest of my metal mix will be loaded. I figure it should take me about 5 days to load eveything I want on it. :D

Stay away from Archos, I bought an FM Jukebox on a buddy's recommendation. Both crapped out and Archos is giving us a hard time. His broke a screen and he paid to have it fixed, now it won't load. Mine never gets past the main screen. I got an Ipod now, and it works great.
