I know this is off topic, but it seemed as good of a place to ask as any.

It has recently come to my attention that H&K makes a non-auto version of the MP5. Does anyone know anything about these carbines? Are they available to non-military or LEOs (or class 3 bastids)? Also, I understand regular MP5s are stupidexpensive for regular Joes; anybody know the price of the MP5SF?

TANKS!

I have seen MP5's going for 10,000.00!!!
H&K has a UMP 45 out for civ's 16 inch barrel.
It is true that the MP5 SD is really insanly stupid expensive but IMO it is an excellent sub machine gun. I had the oportunity to fire one at a machine gun shoot in Stafford CT once. I must say it made me drool. Overall though I feel good in knowing I have at home a Bushmaster .223 M4 clone the XM15E2s. Short barrel 16 inch with pinned folding stock and removable carry handle, equiped with sure-fire light. It makes an excellent home defensive tool IMO.

I could be wrong but it sounds like you're talking about the HK-94, semi-auto only but with a nfa mandated 16" barrel. If they did produce a short barreled semi-auto mp5 (not including the sp-89 which is basically a semi auto mp5k) I've never seen or heard of one.

The 94 is different- with the longer barrell. Plus, it's way hard to find and expensive (since they're not made any more). I just got off the phone with my local gun guy and he told me that the MP5SF is for law enforcement only. He said I can still can get one if I go talk to the sheriff and go through a bunch of red tape.

Check it out at the H&K site:

Ok...I guess I was wrong. I just checked out the link to the HK site. I had no idea they actually produced a semi-auto Mp5. It would be a fun little carbine but I'm sure it would be impossible to ever bring one into California...land of the semi-free, home of the paranoid lawmakers.

They are considered a class III nfa weapon by Hk. The MP-5SF has a hinged trigger housing just like a select fire MP-5 (full auto capable) so the only thing required to make them full-auto is to push a couple pins out and change lowers. They are only sold to tax exempt agencies, and were made to satisfy the needs of agencies who wanted to issue a small carbine to their officers, but did not want them to have full auto capability. I personally would take a small .223/5.56 over the thing any day of the week. My AUG is a similar size with a whole lot more smack on the receiving end.

strider4112,
I'm getting the exact same rifle in about three weeks. Where'd you get the surefire mount? The only ones I've found cost a fortune.
Thanks,

Nyeti is correct.

And I agree with Mick as well. I'd take an M4 (Hell, or even an AR) over an MP5 any day. MP5s are great for taking chicks to the range, but if push came to shove, I'd want something that shots a rifle bullet.

I agree with Mick and the others the MP5's are cool no doubt,

But I like the fact that if I have to go to town I am throwing .223 SS109 62 grainers at the bad guys! Instead of 9mm!

MP5's are great weapons, but certainly not worth the price commanded by the select fire models on the market. Having shot a lot of sub guns, I would rather have my select fire M-4 than any sub gun made at this time for reasons stated above. The only place I see a sub gun working better in a situation is if overpenetration is a concern, or if you want to use a hush puppy!

Greetings, Rob.

Off topic but, while I have your attention, I just wanted to say thanks for the Mini Talon design.

Its my EDC. I posted this at Pistolsmith.com.

A friend of mine was an HK dealer back in the early 80's. I had the opportunity to own any of the civilian models I wanted for what is pennies on the dollar now. I ONLY BOUGHT ONE!!!! I chose the 94 with a collaspable stock. Great toy, but will always regret not buying a 91.

At the time, 94's were bringing $500 new and the 91's were only $700. I have often considered trading my 94 for a 91, but my wife really likes the 94. I should've bought one of everything when I had the chance.

Rob,
Any advise on sharpening the Mini Talon? I haven't had the need yet as I've only owned it but a mere few months, however, the time will come. Advanced thanks.

kogatana, Talonite is actually very easily sharpened, much easier sharpened than many of the popular steels. Just sharpen like you would any steel, taking a little more time to strop off the burr. I like using cardboard tablet backing to strop the burr off Talonite. I do prefer diamond stones for sharpening any knives, followed by the cardboard stropping or a finish with a good quality ceramic. I usually leave off the edge polishing, I like my edges to feel "tacky" I like the aggressive feel of a tacky edge. Hope this helps!
