MPT

First some pictures . Sorry for the poor Quality as they are taken with my cellphone as i don't own a good digital camera yet.

MPT

Today my MPT arrived in the plain edge Grey bead blasted version.

It came hairpopping sharp with a +/- 3.7 mm thick spine. I think it's a full tang construction with overlayered FRN injection on the steelhandle . I think it is very solid build with a nice curved blade with a tanto tip.
The steel is AUS 8.

The handle feels very comfortable and the ribs gets you a very non slippery hold . Hammergrip and reverse grip both feel good.
As i have small to normal handsize I'm very pleased how it feels in hand.

The zytel sheath also pleases me . I couldn't detect any rattle or loose fit.
It came thight and snug. Let's see how it holds in use. EXcellent job so far!

It came with a small Tech lock for multiple carry postitions. Although i'm not a fan of Tech locks as in my opinion they stick out too much with causes snagging on the handle \sheath.

Overall i'm impressed with this compact versatile blade that offers a over 9 centimeters long edge in a compact design.

Thank you Daywalker and Boker for this handy little Fixme:) :)
As it came in this afternoon it will take some edc time to find out more about it.

So far

TAKE CARE

VERY nice! I'm a bit concerned about the modified recurve tanto edge (or whatever it's called), as it looks like it might be a bit more difficult to sharpen than the straighter edges I'm used to. Still, that baby looks too sweet to pass up. It looks like you use the same method I find handy with my kydex sheaths, that is: making a couple belt loops with a piece of paracord. Nice setup. Thanks for the pics. Enjoy your new knife!

Nice review.

Put it through some use and keep us posted on its performance.

Thanks for the review and pics. I cant wait to put my hands on this one, hopefully in the soon future.

Aloha Maarten,

Thanks for the mini-review, and perhaps I can add some pics of my own MPT PE!;) (Hee-hee-HEEEEE!!!:p ) You nailed the concept of the long blade/short handle, and I am glad that you enjoy it!
God bless and do keep us posted!

Aloha G. Scott H.,

Hey buddy! No worries on resharpening either the CE MPT or the PE. Yes, it is a TRUE recurve Tanto, and resharpens VERY easily. Trust me.;)

God bless and take care:cool:

Hello Knivebrothers.
Today I took the mpt to my job as their were a lot of incoming goods which had to be checked and unpacked.

So i cut some cardboardboxes shrinkfoil nylon spanners and plastic.
Well as it came very very sharp out of the box the little devil sailed right through it without any probs and asking for more;) . With the tanto tip i can cut little peeking holes for checking . As this is my first tanto.

The only thing was a coworker giving me the eye... LMAO
Whow what's that he asked and wanted to fondle it..
When i told him about it he wanted one too. (He's into edcstuff too.)

The handle in continuous use did not fatigue my hand allthough it is small. The smart concept is that you can get a save solid grip on the knive even though the blade is ... big for a small fixed blade. When being picky with the edge is 9.7 cm 3.8 inches !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! edge wide and spine wide 9 cm.

As mentioned i have normal to small hands. Looking at Chad's pictures we have about the same handsize. I can get three fingers and a 1/4 pinky on it in hammer grip. In reverse Icepick grip it is even better say perfect.
For people with larger hands i would recommand a small paracord fob with two or three knots which could give extra support to ringfinger and pink. Although i think the handle still feels sturdy and save with 3 fingerfix... And in reverse fix pical it might be the savest knive with blade length in the market today.

Your handsize is nice to know for future designs Mr. Daywalker

The jimping on the spine and the finger recoil is not too agressive when you have to pushcut some nasty stuff allthough i don't think it was needed on the recoil. It does add to the esthetics of the knive in combination with the ribbings on the handle.

I also have little concerns about resharping the mpt .
As it has a recurve blade and a abdrupt tanto it will take a two step process.
I would resharpen the tanto point after "the corner" as first step and the recurved belly as step two.
I normally tend to resharpen on a spyderco 204 set . For reprofiling i use DMT stones.

As the knive is AUS 8 steel i would probably stick to a 40 degrees edge -angle
inclusive. (that is 20 degrees per side).
I'dont know at which angle it comes off factory but normally fixed knives come in this angle.??
For resharpning the tanto tip i would only use the flats on the 204 and hold the knive with the handle down so the tip matches the flats slightly upwards.

As i'm still in a learning process (but tenacious and percistand) with freehand sharpening i can manage normal edges to a decent hair shaving edge although not as sharp as they come out of the box.
I have no experience in freehanding recurved bellies
So recommandations from someone with more experience would be much appreciated. I'm hesistand about recurves on DMT's as i don't want to ruin the curve.

I fixed the knive to my belt with looped paracord and I'm looking for alternatives as the knive is so close to the body it is hard to get it out very swiftly. The small Tech Lock is to narrow for my belts and a large Tech Lock would be overkilling for the sheath and stick out to much.

I came across this:
http://www.fehlschaerfe.de/shop/product_info.php/cPath/39_49/products_id/213

Its a belt loop for IWB carry made out of some kind of rubber.

Does anyone know how they work and if this is a good solution?

As final conclusion i say the knive performed very well..

I forgot to mention that there are 2 little "knobs" at the inside of the sheath where the ricasso goes between with a click it fixes the blade in the sheath.
Very nice..

well thats all for now..
:p

Very nice review, Maarten, and glad you like the MPT.
It is a great design, and I will be posting a review of one in the next few days.
Thanks, TJT

I'll definitely be adding one (PE) to my collection, so I'm glad to hear it. I still have a little trouble with the "short" edge (at the tip) of a traditional tanto, but I think that's because most are so thick. This one looks like a thinner geometry, so we'll see how it goes. Mahalo, bro.

Hi there Scott,

As you can see from my freshly added pic no 2 the tanto tip isn't as thick as for example a strider. Although the spine is 3,7 mm thick it narrows down towards the edge You can see a horizontal line on the spine. Off this line the blade narrows down to a very good narrow edge which makes it a heck of a slicer. :D

Every time i look at the blade configuration i find something new that amazes me .

A WONDERFULL DESIGN CHAD !!!!!!

O and no more Homersounds in the garden with this one chad....

LMAO
:p

Mahalo Maarten,
...for your great review and great pics! I am glad you are enjoying your MPT! (Your co-worker has great taste in knives BTW!:p) Ya know, this MPT is kinda..."odd". I mean, due to the handle to blade ratio, you have long blade cutting ability minus the protruding handle, BUT the handle affords a good grip (I like the Pikal for this one), and it's so unobtrusive that you can forget it's even "there"!
God bless and thanks again Maarten.

Hi chad it is not odd it is brilliant for concealed and sport activity/ working carry where a fixed blade with too large or thick handle pookes you in the side AAAUUUCHHHH :grumpy:.

I'll carry it now fred perrin style like iwb with paracord attached to waist loop

Still trying to find out where the hell i can find those rubber iwb belt loops with chigaco screws ....

:)

Use a short length of nylon webbing and punch holes in it. It will be more stable than a paracord loop.

That sounds like a good idea if only i knew what kind of stuff it is?
If you have a picture example could you show us Esav??

Your idea is appreciated.

I have this problem i found a german dealer who asks 8.50 euro for the rubber strap but shipping wil cost me an extra 15 euro making 23.5 euro
:eek::eek:

Think of the webbing used for seatbelts in autos.
Thanks, Terry
