MPT Sharpening (angle)

Picked up a MPT for abusing at work and it looks like it will fit the bill nicely. Can't believe I waited this long to grab one. Looks like it has a chisel edge so I'm assuming you sharpen the one side and just lightly knock the burr from the back. I'm also assuming the edge will perform better if it is sharpened on the 30 degree side of the sharpmaker rather than the 40 degree side. Are these assumptions correct?
Thanks

Normal production ones are flat grinded on both side at approx. 40 degree included. Might be you picked it up second hand??

Anyway they sharpen easy on ceramics or other abrassives.
If you intend to use it hard i would stay at the 40 degree with AUS 8 steel it has.

Maarten is correct, so I really have nothing to add:D
Thanks, Terry

I will take some pics later and post em. The blade is flat ground but the sharpened edge even on the plainedged portion is only sharpened on one side.

I have a plain edge version. Might be the Plain part on the Combo Edge has less prone edge on the backside. The serrations will be chiselground.
Lets see your pictures.

;)

This side is clearly sharpened

This side in the pic may look like it has a slight edge but is just where I have already used it and worn some of the black off

Definitely a chisel grind.

Mine was the PE version, probably different sharpening for the two versions then. Interesting...

Aloha and welcome bobnery,

Excellent choice, and I swear...the MPT Black has THE MOST smoothest cutting serrations I have ever used. I wish ALL my models in CE had this size serrations...(Ahem-ahem...hint-hint Boker!!!) I call 'em "Scare-ations".:p

Anyway, mine has the exact same edge as yours, but I do not sharpen it any differently than my other knives. But oh how I wish there'd be a chisel version!!!;)

God bless and keep us posted!!!

Answered by the man.............can't complain about that kind of service!:)

Oh and those scare-ations were tearing through some plastic fiber reinforced seed bags today like they were paper. Other knives usually get bound up in that suff!

:p..."the man"...too kind bobnery, far too kind. I am just a "normal" knife nut like everyone here.

Agree with you on the "Scare-Ations"...I prefer WIDE scalloped teeth on mine because like you said, they just don't bind, but cut the heck outta things!!! Also, much easier to re-sharpen.;)

Mahalo much and God bless!

"Scare-Ations" Now that's a good name for them...mine goes through anything like butter and I also sharpen it like I do the rest of my knives as well....Doc:D
