Everyone's heard those Budwieser "Real Men of Genius" commercials, right? Well, now they have an ode to the inventor of the 'giant pocketknife', aka SAK (try saying that three times fast!). I just heard this one an immediately thought of Dan at the convention dinner pulling out his monster SAK with the ballpoint pen. Thanks for the good memories guys. :)

Do you remember me cutting myself too? :p

One thing I'm wondering about - did anybody's perception of another person change?

Here's my list:
(no offense to anyone in particular, just calling it as I saw it)
  • Roadrunner - just as imagined
  • Nasty - very close to what I imagined
  • BrianInChi - very different. Imagined someone younger, taller
  • Thomas - Height and personality exactly as expected.
  • Semp - not as hairy as his avatar, and much nicer than I imagined.
  • Ferrous - I already saw a pic, so I knew what to expect, but was pleasantly taken back by his "Cool...Man...." demeanor
  • Trevor - same
  • Warren - had talked on the phone with Warren. Knew he was a fiesty shorty already.
  • Shawn - no expectation, but a nice chap nonetheless
  • MacHete - completely different. Reminds me very much of a dear friend, same voice, same jovial nature.
  • Hollowdweller - completely different. Expected "country-boy" knuckle-head type. Jim is a very nice guy and extremely friendly.

In all, I was very pleased to meeting everybody. No let downs for me. So great to put a name and face together.

Now how 'bout the rest of y'all?

Roadrunner - just as imagined, seen pic before. No idea he was a collector of hi-end folders, tho, and he had the most energy of anyone there!
Nasty - Very close to what I imagined mebbe bigger, but even nicer in person. He and I could've probably spent another 8= hrs jawing and hangin' (hey, I only got one shot of the "2-shot mega-saki stuff!)
BrianInChi - I also expected soemone younger, but Bri is pleasant!
Thomas - Taller than I thot, but an even better wellfont of knowledge when engaged in person. Thomas and I could probably write books on "Historica obscura" for a living. Trevor and I found him a great person to talk to.
Semp - Nice guy, Taller than I imagined.
Warren - Energetic, great practical resource on the convex grind, like Pen
Shawn - no expectation, but a nice chap nonetheless...
MacHete - Funnier in person, good guy to talk to, interested in all sorts o blades and stuff.
Hollowdweller - Seemed kind, competent, much friendlier and engaginng that I might have thought. Jim and I see eye to eye on many things.
Pen - Also quite knowledgeable, patient, competent, a god director of ops for the event, he hardly slept (course, he has two wee ones). Perhaps a bit more soft spoken than I had thought, but what he had to say was always good info or positive.

Trevor had a great time, wasnt sure what 2 expect, since he didn;t get ot forumize with the rest of us. He was totally impressed with everyone, and really got engaged in things. He and I botrh agree we shoulda came on Fri, and will arrive as early as possible next time!

Hmm. I could have done this more easily, and probably more accurately, sooner after the Khon. But, thinking hard, I remember this:

I had pictured everyone older than they turned out to be. Ferrous was the biggest surprize here, as he is truly wise and learned beyond his years. Dan, Your pic is your avatar, and you post a lot, so you were easily recognized by both appearance and demeanor. My images of both Nasty and Semper Fi were colored by my experiences with other "old Marines". Let's just say they both did a lot to improve my stereotype. I was half-expecting annoying loudmouths. Neither were annoying, and Semp was very quiet. (not that you were a loudmouth, Nasty) Both were very friendly. Here's an embarrassing one- Brian in Chi. Even though I knew the 'Chi' was Chicago, I couldn't get the subliminal image out of my mind that Brian was oriental. :o Warren and Hollow Dweller were both much younger than I expected. And I wasn't expecting anyone to be as industrious as HD was. Roadrunner, Thomas, Trevor and Shawn were all younger than I thought they'd be, and everyone was as cool and friendly as I hoped they'd be. I'm really looking forward to next year! :D As Pen said, it was great to put some faces to the names.

Here's my list:
(no offense to anyone in particular, just calling it as I saw it)

Roadrunner - Younger than imagined, but very mature (and intelligent) in spite of that
Dan - Very close to what I imagined...knowledgeable, generous and dedicated
BrianInChi - Very different. Imagined someone *much* younger, taller, no doubt due to his positive attitude toward life
Thomas - I had no picture of Tom..he was the hard one to pin down
Semp - Thought we'd hit it off or hate each other, very pleased just how much we have in common
Ferrous - *Much* more laid back and solid with the world than I expected
Trevor - Had no idea, very pleased that he is also very level
Warren - Knew he was fiesty...but not how generous and infectious
Shawn - No expectation other than had to be okay as a friend , turned out to be a great guy
MacHete - Much friendlier and warmer than I expected (except for killing ducks)
Hollowdweller - A great guy, which I expected, but much more like an old friend from the 60's than I'd have guessed
