First off, I want to thank B B1GSHOT for sending over the box so it can continue. I did not quite expect how insanely fun this little exercise was!

So, I decided to keep the following: the A. Wright & son Buffalo Barlow, the Shrade+ Old Timer 3-blade stockman, a very well-patinated 3-blade Ranger, as well as one of the slips.
Additionally, my daughter spotted the little penguin and borderline-Disney-copyright-infringing figure so I pulled those too, since this is a family forum.

What remained looked something like this:

To this I added: 2 Opinels, #7 and #8, a Buck 55, and then 3 SAK-adjacent knives. The Victorinox single-blade Alox, another SD because why not?, and a single-blade Wenger Ranger. I also tossed in 2 sharpening tools: the “Smith Natural Arkansas” stone and the little Victorinox field sharpener tool.

In the previous round, B1GSHOT suggested that the box be thinned out a bit. I really only found 2 strong candidates: the straight razor and the Camillus Boy-Scout-esque knife. The problem with separating the straight razor is that I know truly nothing about straight razors, so for all I know it might be a priceless heirloom of great historical significance. So I’m putting it back into the box.
The dark stuff on the Camillus is not quite a patina; it Is more of a baked-on tar-like substance. I figure cleaning it up would be a great project that I totally have time for. When I either succeed or give up, I’ll do some sort of GAW for it.

So, time for the next round!

I am automatically including those who wanted in last round. So here are the entrants so far:
1. JTB_5 JTB_5
2. Ernie1980 Ernie1980
3. AdamFuzzyballs AdamFuzzyballs
4. P PirateSeulb
5. CVamberbonehead CVamberbonehead
6. S scattershot

If you want to get your shot at this super-fun endeavor, just post to this thread and I'll add you to the above list.

I will do a drawing a week from now, on the evening of March 25th.

Glad the little toys found a friend. Those are souvenirs from Japan. By the way, one of the SAKs has a bent blade. You might want to pull that out of the batch.
Is it the main blade? For some reason, I really don't see a bent blade.

It looked like black house paint to me. It was all up in the insides of the knife like it had been dropped in a bucket of paint and allowed to dry..

I might try less aggressive cleaners first but since I can't tell as much about it from looks and based on B B1GSHOT comment about it seeming to be paint I might try some type of stripper just working carefully to not get it on the scales. I don't know what it might do to the scales it might do nothing to them but why risk unless you know it is harmless.

Change of plans:
When the box recipient is drawn, I'll ask him/her if they want the scout knife to restore. If they do, I will include it. If they do not want it, I'll send it separately to someone who wants to deal with it.

Update: Ernie's box is going out later today. He does not want the gunked up scout knife. If anyone wants it, post for it and I will send it to you. Hopefully, you can share its progress.

If no one else wants to give it a try, I’ll gladly give it a go. We have lots of safe cleaning materials at work and I’ve been learning to restore old slipjoints over the past few weeks. I’d be happy to clean it up to former glory!
