Hi! Welcome back to the never ending give a way!

Here are the rules:

• Be a member of the Porch (minimum 50 posts to the “Traditional" forum).
• Post "I'm in”

• Paying members of BF only.

If You Win The Box:

• When you receive the box, take any number of knives and replace them with knives of equivalent (or greater) value.
• Then, hold your own GAW to keep this fun Porch tradition going. Take and post photos!!!
• Post a link to your new GAW thread in this thread.
• Pick a new winner and mail them the box.

I included those signed up for the last round. Post "I'm in" if you want to be added to the list!!

This is how the box came to me. Excuse my kids playmat in the photo, that wasn’t in the box lol

I decided to take the cheaper GEC knives to use, but left the stag GEC for a real collector to enjoy (wow is it beautiful!). I also took an old Case stockman since I like to restore old knives and carry them. I replaced the knives with some pretty cool picks I think, and I threw in extra because this is the 99th round! Some highlights: I put in a very nice Wenger Highlander with a serrated blade, a pretty unique take on Swiss Army knife. The Cases are all like new in box, and the Doctor knife is not something you see everyday, plus it is razor sharp! The Bose teardrop is probably the coolest, it is the fanciest Case I’ve ever seen, with some really cool touches

I threw in some random bonus stuff for fun, like some nice fountain pens for writing upcoming Christmas cards, and a sharpener, and a keychain tool. image.jpg

If you want in, just say so and I will draw a winner right after Thanksgiving. Happy holidays everybody, and good luck!

The tear drop is really neat, it has springs that take up space in the back so that they are nestled right up against the blades. Not sure what it is called, but it’s pretty cool. The plunge grinds on the blades are radiused also. Really a cool unique knife I think. Plus I love the jigged bone and fancy shield with the line bolsters, and the cool drop point blades (the pen blade especially). Lots of neat little touches and the finish is spot on too.

I’d like to add a thought that pertains, perhaps, to what I feel has become a recent unwritten understanding regarding this box.

When Paul Jakeywax31 Jakeywax31 got his turn at this box several rounds ago, he breathed a huge amount of life back into this pass around. He did it primarily through two actions: adding GEC knives, and taking knives not only of less value, but knives that were less desirable. I thought this was a stellar gesture into this. into this great Porch tradition.

Since then, members have been good to take a GEC and replace it with another GEC. I’ve only seen this not done once, when Gary replaced a 81 muskrat with a Queen made Colonel Coon Whittler that was gobbled up a couple of boxes later.

While the knives you have elected to put back in the box are all fine knives, none of them are going to be anywhere near as desirable as a GEC. Taking four GEC knives out and putting none back in greatly reduces the interest that will be given to the pass around.

I would have to disagree that a 32 pattern and a 85 pattern are just run-of-the-mill and not collectible, and I’m sure there are plenty that collect F&F models.

I’m certainly not saying that one could only replace a GEC with a GEC. But there are only a few other options out there that are going to be as desirable and create interest like a GEC - Schatt and Morgan, Case Classics, pre 80’s Case knives in great shape, and a select few others may bring as much interest as any GEC model.

Just a few thoughts to consider to sustain the interest that has heightened around the box.

All the best-
Jon

Ok. I don’t really collect GECs generally so I don’t know what is or isn't collectible. I know the north field stuff is fancy so I figured I’d leave that for the safe queen enthusiasts. I just use knives that I like and I know the other GEC lines are cheaper (at least I thought I did lol). So I didn’t take them to be a jerk or flip them on eBay or anything. I just liked those and then I put in more than I took out. I’m a regular in this pass around and I have always tried to improve it on my turns. You’re the first person who has ever complained about me here actually as far I know. Sorry to offend.

I don't think that JonMcD JonMcD was complaining about you CVamberbonehead CVamberbonehead , I think he was just explaining that the neverending GAW relies on people adding fewer but more desirable knives to maintain interest. When you started round 82, only 4 people entered. By the time you started round 87, I was the only person to enter because the desireability of the contents of the GAW box had dropped so low. Just like back in round 47, the bloat had gotten so bad, and the box had gotten so huge, that 315 315 had to do a massive culling to keep the GAW going.

The knives don't have to be GECs, when I started round 88 I only had one GEC to put in, but I also had a nice Northwoods to put in, both of those got selected quickly. But I also put in the Boker because I thought folks would like that, since it is still circulating, clearly that wasn't a good choice. And I don't have nice handmade knives to add to the pot like @eric brinkerhoff did back in the day.

You have been an absolutely key member keeping this box going for quite some time CVamberbonehead CVamberbonehead , I don't think anyone wants to complain about you or devalue your contributions. It is just important to try to optimize our selections and additions if we want to keep things moving. If you are taking four GEC knives out of the box and not replacing them with things of comparable desireability, then that is just going to discourage future participation. Adding another SAK when there are already three in the box, is not going to attract more people. The knives you added are all nice, but I think you have to admit that they don't make the box sweeter, just heavier.

Ok, well I guess I stepped on some toes.... lol

Sorry, I didn't mean to be a prick. First off, I have seen the pass around at its worst and have helped to fix it once or twice when it was a box of crap. I did not put any crap in here. I was not trying to make it into a box of crap again.

I will change up my picks and try this again I guess... I haven't been very involved with this hobby or website since I had a kid about a year ago so I guess I forgot how precious the little cardboard tubes apparently are lol.

I redid my picks after some consideration, and I decided on these.

I replaced them with these.

I added a GEC toothpick and the Case teardrop because people seemed more interested in those.
I added in some extra stuff for fun and I culled out the splintery handled Otter knife and the super loose and rusty advertising knife to lighten the box for the next shipper.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, and good luck. 👍 😊
