I got a brief moment of pride yesterday at the Library of congress when I came across the possessions of president Lincoln when he was shot. Included in his posessions was a little folder pocket knife. It was nice to see that even a President of the United States of America, even thought it was the late 1800's, understood the everyday handiness of a pockenknife.

W! carries a custom Bose every day. It was a gift from his father who also carries (and carried as President) one.

In fact, our current President is a modest collector of traditional folding knives.

That's cool that W carries. And a Bose!! Very nice.

Maybe we should all chip in and get him a Sebenza.

I wonder what, if anything, John F. Kerry carries?

Well, I bet Kerry DOESN'T carry his balls.... his wife probably has those safely locked away where he can't use them.

Why would John Kerry carry a knife? He just snaps his fingers for a servant to run over and snip what needs severing. :p

Very cool fact, I had no idea. Where did you come up with that info Gollnick?

Not only is it great that he carries but he has great taste as well.

While Kerry's wife carries his brain and his money;) .

The gift of the knife, the fact that W! carries it, and the fact that he has a collection of pocket knives was in US News and World Report (as I recall) a few years ago. George Sr. gave one to each of his sons. So, I assume Jeb carries his too. Anyway, I did some research and found out the knives were Bose and that W! collects traditional folders.

What does Kerry carry?

He answered that himself when he was here in Portland a few weeks ago. He carries a four-leaf clover that was given to him by some woman he met at a campaign stop. He promised to "[and I'm not quoting word-for-word here]put this four-leaf clover on the desk in the Oval Office to bring good luck to the entire nation."

I kind of like the contrast: John Kerry is relying on a four-leaf clover to save us. W!'s got a knife!

I've met some wealthy men in my days, a few anyway, and read about even more. They all seem to collect something. Art, sports cars, race horses, divorce settlements, whatever. W! collects traditional pocket knives. George Bush Sr. collects cowboy boots (upwards of a hundred pairs I read somewhere). Aside from Purple Hearts, I wonder what John Kerry collects?

You know, I like the image of a President who retains some self-reliance, who doesn't have to ring for his valet every time there's a thread hanging on his jacket, call for his secretary to open an envelope, or summon a doctor (or manicurist) to deal with a little hangnail. A man who can't even deal with life's little problems shouldn't be wrestling with the nation and the world's big problems.

In fact, I am now recalling, and I don't remember where it was reports, that then-President George Bush Sr. was aboard some military ship at some point, heard that one of the men was particularly adept at sharpening knives, and produced from his pocket his own knife and asked the seaman to sharpen it for him.

I particularly like how he got the name of "Honest" Abe. :D

I like this quote from a letter by George Washington to a storekeeper. Apparently the letter has been authenticated:

"Dear Sir; I have lost and cannot tell how an old favourite penknife and am much distressed for want of one -- If you have any in your store please to send me one -- If you would be so good as to get me one immediately -- Perhaps you could furnish me with a knife with two blades. I should prefer this where choice can be had. Yr Most Obed, G. Washington."
