It was brought up somewhere that one of the ethnic designs you are working on is a folding khukri design. I'm all for it, but I was curious since the real strength of the design seems to be in its chopping power how you envisioned it translated into a folder.

And while I hopefully have you here is there any word on your own 3V chopper making it into production? Thanks.

Jack

As I understood it, Mr Schempp is working on a FIXED blade that is Khukri shaped.

Hear/read that Mr. Schempp showed a Navaja (spanish ethnic design) at the last show. BIG fan of that design, even the CS X2 Voyager ;)

The camp-competition knife has some khukri type aspects to its design, as well as Philippine bolo and Japanese architexture. I do have a folding Khukri designs. They are not real good choppers as folders, but like a lot of my designs it has a negative blade angle, and makes a high pressure pull cut...Ed

Thanks, Ed. Is there any talk of the folder making it into production? And is the 3V competition blade still a go for Spyderco?

Jack

Yes Jack,
The Khukri, large and small are in the pipeline. I believe the Barong will be next. There is a Navaja and small Kris also in the pipeline. The camp-competition blade will be 3V and is still under development. It will require a handle mold, a Kydex or similar material sheath, and packaging designed for this largest of Spyderco Products. The Tuff folder will probably be made with 3V and thick Titanium scales and compression lock...Take Care...Ed

The question on the khukri is, given Sal's announced intention to have the Spyderhole on all of his knives, where will you be putting it on the khukri?

I usually make a thumbstud opener on a proto-type blade. I use the thumb stud location as the center of the hole in Spydercoized folders...Ed

WOOHOO!!! Navaja in the works. This is very exciting news. A Spyderco Navaja has been one of my dream projects and hearing tthat its at least in the pipeline is very cool. I hope this one is "tactical";-)>

I had asked under the impression that the khukri was to be a fixed blade. One possiblity suggested elsewhere was as the "cho".

I initially wondered as Sal had said that he was going to be putting the Spyderhole in all Spyderco knives from now on.

Fuller, that is what I understood as well. On the new Perrin knife there is a Spyderhole, but it is very small. I imagine the other fixed-blades would be similar if there was not a specific use for them.

Hi Ed,

reading your text
The Tuff folder will probably be made with 3V and thick Titanium scales and compression lock.
I find it very exciting. Both the idea to use 3V steel, and the idea of a tuff TUFF. In my opinion the integral compression lock is potentially the toughest and the most secure lock. The toughest, because even the compression part is a fat scale and therefore even more strong, and the most secure because one keeps a compression part additionally at the right place by hand. By 'normal' compression lock, I guess, sudden impacts could give a momentum transfer causing the compression part to 'jump' back - the effect known to appear (rarely) by liner locks.
I understand that Tuff is a confidential sTUFF, but could one get some quite general info, something like
1. is it something similar to Striders?
2. is it something more hunting oriented (as Wegner, Impala, or even Persian) or more universal blade shape (say, Manix, or Milie).

One more question, Ed. Concerning the ethnic knives, do you consider a Yatagan as a possible design? I had few times yatagan in my hand and was very impressed. It looks as a perfect MBC tool. BTW, that yatagan was an original one, might be 2-3 centuries old, and was in very good shape. The price was around $ 500. The knife was roughly as long as your new Camp knife!

New Perrin fixed blade? Can you give some more info please?

Thanks

I am very interested in a quality-built and (reasonably) classic design Navaja.

I have an old "Folding Kukri" once manufactured by Blackjack; it is a heavy-duty cutter, for sure! I'm sure Spyderco can match or surpass it.

Ed,
I still have to say that I think that your folding khukri is one of the best designs I've ever seen in a folder! It just has to be put into production!!!!
