Just finalized a trade with Gene. My D. Ralph Aftermath for a J.W. Smith LDC-5. Had been looking at this model when one would pop up every so often but there just aren't that many out there. This one is a bit special also. It has a set of smooth stag handles and a full titanium backspacer, both done by J.W. So it is a true "one-of-a-kind" From the specs this is another beefy Smith Tactical folder but built, like all of them, as lovingly and precise as a $2500.00 art folder by the same maker. Of course the problem will be "do I carry and use it?" or put it up to look at? I'm sure it will see the inside of my pocket before it is over with! Nice that it also comes with the original scales, backspacer, and screws.

Well.....I was selling the Aftermath to go after more Smith's, so I guess I acomplished my goal!:D

Had hoped to have this one today. Gene tried but he does live in the boonies and the USPS couldn't do overnight past Thursday. So it looks like it will be Monday or Tuesday before this bad boy will arrive. Got to thinking about it and decided thatt would work out better as it would give me more time to continue checking out the new Obie I just received.

Really looking forward to getting this one though. I have always loved stag and in fact sold the best looking stag handled knife I've ever owned, a KFF with stag overlays, and it eventually ended up in Gene's hands! From the scans Gene sent me this LDC-5 has smooth stag scales which is my preference. On a using knife, and this one will be carried, the smooth stag is easier for me to grip and stag seems to be sorta "sticky" anyhaow and really sticks to your hand. On a display knife I don't mind the deeply grooved stag.

Gonna try to get some pics or at least scans up to show off this beauty. Barring that I will get Dexter to take some pictures next Saturday when we get together at the W-S gun/knife show.

Hi Art,
Yeah, I apologize again that I couldn't get it to you overnight but I tried everything I could and that's one of the small prices I pay for living in God's Country! :) If we would have made the deal just one day earlier, you would be holding it in your hands right now. You're gonna love this puppy though and the smooth stag really dress this piece up! I supplied my own stag to JW because it really had some beautiful texture to it but he had to smooth it and polish it down to make it fit the knife. It's kind of unique though because you don't see many smoothed and polished stag scaled folders these days.

These LDC-5's as I've stated many times before are probably the beefiest folders that JW's ever made. They are one "hunk" of a knife and as strong and hearty as ANY of the other "popular" tacticals out there. As you know, Les had input on these also and I've commended him before on a job well done!

One correction though, which I stated to you in private e-mail is that JW did replace the original Micarta backspacer with a ti one, (which is MUCH nicer than the original), but it's not FULL but about 4/5. To me this is nicer than a full back because you can still access the stop pin and most of the innard's for cleaning and it still appears to be almost full.

I was tempted to post one of my lousy scans of your knife here but would never steal your thunder! ;) Anyway Dex can take a MUCH better scan for you than me. Please tell Dex, Mike and the others "hi" for me when you see them next week and don't hold back on your thoughts on the "one-of-a-kind" LDC-5!

One final thought is I still have that stag Crawford KFF that used to be yours. Tried to sell it awhile back and got some really nice offers but decided I couldn't part with it. Keep us abreast Art and thanks.

One last thing. I neglected to give "thanks" to our good friend "miquet", (Capt. Mike Mahony), who introduced me to JW's stuff and is one of the nicest, kindest, gentlemen on the whole Internet!

Well, well!! The plot thickens. Good for you, Art.
Gene told me about that LDC-5 a couple of weeks ago,
Sounds like a real winner:D
And ya, that Mike Mahony guy:D

Yep, I figure it is going to be a nice one! Can't wait for it to show. Hoping to get it today but most likely tomorrow. Gene, don't you worry as I will definately post my thoughts.......there will be no holding back! :D This will give me 6 J.W. Smith folders. It may be time to halt for a while. NAH!

Did strike out onto another maker to try out his wares. Brian Tighe's Tighe-Phoon looks to be a very nice knife and is from Les's Vanguard collection so it is going to be some of Brian's best work. Check out one and take a look at the handle. I believe this is going to fit my hand like a glove!

WOW!!! I just about fell out of my chair when I opened this one up and saw and felt it for the first time! It is a fantastic piece of work. The smooth stag scales have just a little speckle of color and the rest is a creamy white. They are fitted perfectly to the handle and as is J.W.'s style are just a hair thicker than the bolster. The ti spacer just adds a more solid feel to the knife. When you grip this one you instinctively know it is SOLID! The handle is a handful to begin with but the added stag gives you a grippy feel that lets you know you've got a great hold on the knife. Everything else is simply typical J.W. Smith. Lockup, action, razor sharp blade, fit and finish are all top notch. I am extremely pleased with the trade I made.

Btw, I like the idea of a solid ti/steel spacer so much that my obie 2's are going to be retrofitted for this and I am going to talk to Kit about that E&E!

I'm waiting to see Mr. Smith goes to Washington! LOL

Sorry Art, i couldn't help myself, glad to see your happy with that new Smith of yours. hehe

James

I had that same thought in the back of my head as I typed the title!!:D

It would be welcome here in Washington anytime you want to make it happen! :D :D :D Could guarentee a very comfortable stay. Just say the word!

Bill

If it ever wears out its welcome in N.C..................ah heck, who are we kidding? It won't EVER wear out its welcome!:D  :)

So glad you like it Art but I KNEW you would! ;) You're one of the "good guys" and it couldn't have gone to a more appreciative and nicer owner. Yeah, I love those ti backspacers. ALL folders, (at the very LEAST, utility/tacticals), should have them. I'll give a report on the Aftermath when it's received. Enjoy that great "one-of-a-kind"!
