Just read over in reviewland that a gentleman named Phil Wilson has been cryo-quenching CPM steels and achieving Rc results in the low to mid 60's. If those turn out to include S30V and are practiceable on a large scale, would Spyderco consider making higher-Rc S30V blades?

I would think steel at that hardness would be too brittle and tends to chip.

My Native in S30V already does tend to chip. Whereas my BM921 hasn't done so at all. Not a slam, I love my Native, I just wish the blade were tougher.

Hi Sheltot. We've not experienced chipping in our S30V. Although I would guess that our edges are considerably thinner than BMs. The steel is what it is. I don't think it will be tougher from one maker. The variables are Rc and edge geometry.

I don't think that Phil Wilson is doing that with S30V. Probably another CPM.

The two times it has happened, it has been very near the tip. The first time, I was scoring some very soft shim material in order to break it. I just happened to look at it, and notice a very small chip. The second time, I don't don't recall what I was doing as I noticed it at the end of the day. In both instances, I was able to sharpen it out with my sharpmaker. That should tell you how small the chips were.

I plan on getting one of the new ones in VG-10. Just for the variety. :D
