Usually, I'm pretty good with waiting to download MS "critical updates" until they've been around for a while to make sure they work as advertised. Being lazy this morning, I downloaded the latest security patch on the way out. Getting to work, I read this article:

http://www.betanews.com/article/Windows_DNS_bug_fix_can_impair_firewalls_including_ZoneAlarm/1215617981

Luckily, I have Agnitum Security Suite, not ZoneAlarm (or Look'n'stop, which is having similar problems). Hopefully it's working when I get home tonight.

I wonder if they do this on purpose...

I'm running Online Armor firewall (free version) and XP Pro. Installed the update this morning and haven't had a problem.

I never install any of the updates until they're released as a Service Pack. Even then, I wait to see what sorts of difficulties others are having. Makes my life much easier...

Yah, I downloaded those updates this morning, and after that, hardly anything worked, so I had to do a system restore. I have Zone Alarm, but I'm thinking that maybe I should dump that and go back to Ad-Aware...??

The problem is with an incompatability between the patch and the firewall component of ZoneAlarm. Ad-Aware is a completely different type of program (anti-spam - which ZoneAlarm has a better version of). I'd say go to the forums or technical support webpage for ZoneAlarm and see what you can do about it (if anything, until ZoneAlarm comes out with an update).

My computer is doing an auto install. I also have ZA and also had to do a system restore.

Bob, how do you keep it from auto installing?

Thanks.

I just signed on to that "BetaNews" thing, as it looks to be a very helpfull site.

It's a simple setting in Windows XP:

Control Panel --> Automatic Updates --> "Turn off automatic updates"

Exactly. That's what I did, as it kept trying to re-install those darn updates, even if I "told" it not to.

Did a system restore after checking everything from the phone line to my keyboard. Just installed a new networking system, so it got me thinking I broke something. Off goes Automatic Updates, thought it was just me.

I used Zone Alarm a lot in the past and still support it on a lot of my family's computers because it works well and is easy for non-techies to deal with.

For the past year, more or less, I've been using Comodo. Parts of it are over my head but it does a great job and is free.

And no problems with the update.

Phil

I got caught with this as well, nearly two days of no Internet because my provider, the hated Charted, failed to realize what was going on.
I finally got a recorded message about the incompatibility of this security update and Zone Alarm.
Turned it off, downloaded the latest version, and all was well.

I've had very few compatibility problems with ZA, there was a problem with Red Orchestra a some time back, but they resolved that.

Daggnabbit! I'm not the only one it seems. It has totally screwed up Norton Anti-virus as well. I'm turning off those retarded automatic updates. Now I've got to figure out how to do a system restore.

That explains my issues today! Don't understand how downloading the latest free zonealarm installer and reinstalling it fixed things, but it certainly did!
