Hi guys, do we have any Word maestros here? I want to insert numbered examples into my lecture notes. Because I update my notes from time to time, it would be handy if the numbers would automatically update. I know you can do this via the References menu, if you are doing standard items like tables, figures, etc. However there is no option for examples. I know you type the word in, in this case Example, then you press <CTRL> F9 and it inserts a pair of braces, which I believe is a field holder. Then inside the braces you type, I think, the word Example again, and you do something else. But I can't work out how to do it. Any suggestions?

Mmm, I don't think that would work because Appendices are usually consecutive, and my examples are not consecutive, ie they are separated by text. Nice thinking outside the square though, thanks.

Do not use the function keys if you are new at Word. I am not new at Word by a long shot and I never use the function keys.

Which version of Word are you using? '97, 2000, 2003 or, God help you, 2007 or 2010?

At home I run Office '97, because it does everything I need to do at home, so I've never upgraded. I do use 2003 at work. A lot.

At least in '97, you start by choosing the "insert" menu.
Click "caption" and you get a popup.
There's a button on the popup that says, "new label". Click it and you get to put a new type of label, in your case, "example".

IIRC, 2003 is similar. If you run a later version, you are SOL in so far as my being able to help.

Edited to add:
I just tried on Word 2010. actually pretty similar except you start from "references", then click on the "insert caption" icon. Still brings up that popup with the <new label> button.
