I apologize for the picture quality. The pictures are not mine but are of a knife that looks interesting to me and one I was about to buy, but thought I'd do a sanity check with the guys first.
I find much controversy surrounding Marbles knives in general and hope to find answers and advice about THIS specific knife ONLY.
This Marbles USA white jigged bone single blade mini trapper is said to be 1 of 60 made and made in the USA (though the manufacturer is not specifically stated) .
From the tang stamp, I think it was produced in 2002 (?) ... by Queen ?? The steel is said to be D2 and as far as I know, Queen was the only cutlery that produced Marbles in D2.
The knife is 3 1/2" closed.
Asking price is $50 in near mint condition. There are several available.
Aside from any controversy I also hear names like Dave Shirley and Mike Stewart associated with Marbles and in collaboration with Queen around this time period 2001-2003/04 but I don't know if they were into folders or just Marbles fixed blade knives. I know Webster Marble didn't care for folders, only selling two and neither were actually produced in Gladstone. One in/up until 1909 and later, a Sunfish/Elephant Toe. I think Case Brothers produced both those for Marbles.
So someone much MUCH later came up with the idea of this mini trapper and "slapped" the MSA Marbles name on it (Stewart?). I still like it for the D2 and white bone and single blade mini trapper size ... but only if it was actually made here in the USA as I suspect it MIGHT/COULD be and it is in fact, D2 steel.
My questions are:
Do you think this knife was made in the USA? ... by Queen?
Do you have one and can give your opinion of it?
Or do you think it is "a fake" and I should run as fast as I can?
Thanks !!!
