Okay, I know there is a certain disdain here for Mick Strider and Strider Knives. This doesn't pertain to that wholly. I have no current interest in what he claimed and was proven wrong, or the quality of his production knives. My question lies in something I just read on Micks Instagram page. A person asked how he could go about ordering a custom made SJ75, to which Mick responded "I don't do custom orders. Sorry. You can email me, telling me what you're looking for and you'll be notified should one become available". That seems like am oxymoron, because he does call his blades "Mick Strider Customs". Why would a maker not take customer orders? Is it simply not cost effective for certain things, along the same lines of how Mick doesn't NM grind PTs anymore? Or is it something else? Thanks guys, Tink

I think you are overthinking it. He probably means that he does not offer custom, made to order knives. He makes custom knives, and you can buy whatever he ends up making. As far as getting something like your choice in handle material, blade grind, steel, and other aesthetics, no. You buy a custom from what is already available, listed for sale at retailers as a MSC knife.

Why does he not take custom orders? Because he doesn't need to. I'd bet he sells just about everything he makes. I'd say he is beyond the level of taking orders and having "books". Aside from that, if history is any indication taking custom orders can become far more trouble than it is worth. The maker puts himself on the hook for his time and skills with the hope that someone will pay whenever the piece is done. It's a safer investment from a business perspective to simply make what you make knowing that someone will end up buying it and quickly.

Maybe to keep from getting bogged down in custom orders. Some people just make what they make and sell it as it comes. With someone who has a full production knife company and who probably only works part time (pure speculation on my part) on customs, it takes the headache out of keeping up with filling custom orders in a timely manner, getting bogged down and keeps the fun from being sucked out of knife making.

Like many custom makers he doesn't take custom orders which is what he said " I don't do custom orders" for the shear fact can you image making the same knife over and over and over and over and over again how it no longer becomes enjoyable...there has to be a little freedom to experiment.......has nothing to do with cost
