Reported to be in effect by October 14, 2003.

This is CHAT however, not the forums. Interesting,eh? I've not seen official reports, but got the information from a friend in the UK. Advertising must not be paying Bill's bills.

I happen to be reading the news right now, so here's the "official" version:

As part of an overall effort by MSN and Microsoft to provide consumers with a safer, more secure and positive overall online experience, MSN has decided to no longer offer MSN Chat in this market beginning October 14 2003.

This change is intended to help protect MSN users from unsolicited information such as spam and to better protect children from inappropriate communication online. We will ensure you get the best and safest customer experience during those last weeks where free unmoderated chat will still be available.

MSN wants you to enjoy the Internet safely. Click here to find out more about how to ensure your online experience is positive.

Why is MSN doing this?

The increase in abuse of the Internet, such as the massive growth of spam and the increase in unsolicited and inappropriate material, particularly with regards to children, has led us to this decision.

and...

Microsoft_is closing internet chat rooms because their misuse by spammers, paedophiles and others is damaging the reputation of its MSN service and the internet as a whole.

The decision is the latest attempt by Microsoft to increase trust among users of its software. It has vowed to tackle computer viruses that have exploited weaknesses in its Windows operating system and infected millions of computers. It has also declared war on unsolicited e-mails by prosecuting spammers and introducing improved filtering of junk e-mails in its programs.

The MSN Chat service will close worldwide from October 14, apart from in the US, Canada and Japan, where it will become subscription-only, with users providing their personal details.

Geoff Sutton, MSN general manager for Europe, said it had become clear that unmoderated chat was not safe...

...MSN Chat has rooms under categories such as music, sports and entertainment. Yesterday, its romance section was being sub-let to bondage "dungeons", "swingers" and adult chat...

LOL!

...Microsoft believes making chat a subscription service in the US, Canada and Japan will make it less anonymous, as users will have to enter their credit card details. It felt it did not have enough users in other countries to sustain subscription chat...

What can't be justified by "the children"??

I'm pretty sure they're losing money on it--just about every venture except their core OS and office suite software has been in the red from the get-go, from what I've seen.

If one has to try and grab a big piece of every damn pie, one shouldn't be surprised when told there's some yucky stuff under the fingernails, or a few stains on the shirt.

It is a known fact that Microsoft, Aol, and SBC would like to donminate the internet completely. MS I have no doubt has an ulterior motive for what it does most of the time. Who do you think is behind some of the Porn sites?

I think once any business gets big enough that it doesn't have a personal relationship with its customers, that the "ulterior motives" (i.e trying to get more money for less) are bound to appear. Reach a certain size, and involve enough money and they naturally grow beaucracies just like government. And like government, politicians end up running the show--it's rare for a "good guy" to get to the top of any political heap. It is pretty sad that people think trying to be the "next Microsoft" is a realistic business model.

Porn, or whatever one wants to call it has been around forever--Check out some old Greek pottery.

It's true that some of the guys trying to sell the stuff on the 'net have been the first to come up with obnoxious, intrusive net applications that everybody else is adopting, like pop-up windows, taking over your browser or generating endless spam. Without porno tapes, the VCR would probabably gotten off to a much slower start on its path to becoming an inexpensive, ubiquitous home appliance.

And if your ISP contracts to them to run their DNS, if you make a typo and send an E-mail to a non-exsistant adress, they get the E-mail too, instead sending a message that says "couldn't be delivered" People are PO'ed. Really.

Just about everybody has some folks hired to think of a way to attach a leech to you--making a living by providing services for an agreed price just doesn't seem good enough anymore. Even with a monopoly.:barf:

At least in ancient Greece somebody didn't sneak into your house and repaint your pots.:)
