MSP Core Recon
Once again I got suckered for a new Wood Stove!
The first time I used the MSP Core 4 Stove I was very impressed!
So when Chad asked me if I wanted to give the MSP Core Recon a Workout I didn't hesitate to jump on that opportunity! With high expectations I was anxious to see what it could do.
MSP Core Recon was provided by MySurvivalPack.com
Design and options.
I was happy to see the MSP Core Recon like its Big Brother has all the bells and whistles like the TLUD plate, Afterburners and Rocket port, door, Grill, carry bag, ect.. and when are afterburners, TLUD plate, Rocket port are use together the Core Recon burns bio-mass fuel, gasses/smoke very efficiently!
There was 2 noticeable changes besides the narrower profile.
Heres the Recon left next to the Core 4 right.
First is the crown on the top edge seems to be taller and second is the vents on the front panel seems to be opened as well.
Core 4 top, Recon bottom.
Seems when you mention something to MSP they listen.
The Recon's grill seems to be stove specific so the core 4 grill wont lock in place to the Recon and vice versa but could still be used if thats all you had.
Like the original Core 4 alcohol burners like a Trangia or Esbit Burner fits the Recon's TLUD plate perfectly!
Assembly
The first thing to take notice of when assembling the Recon is that the 2 sides are wider than front and back. This should let the same length of wood in the stove as the Original Core 4.
Being Use to assembling the Original Core 4 I knew what to expect. When sliding the pieces together I immediately noticed the Recon had tighter fitting pieces. It seems Chad tightened up the tolerance on the parts. This made assembly a little harder than the Original Core 4 but not by to much. I actually think it might help the Recon Burn more efficiently.
How's it Perform?
I decided to do 2 different boil test using the Recon in two ways.
1) simple mode with 4 walls and a burn plate.
2) with 4 walls, burn plate, 3 afterburners, TLUD plate and Rocket Port.
In this review I did test #1 and will add test #2 when video and results are ready.
To stay with tradition of my first burn in stoves like this I used wood/twigs from gathered from around my property instead of dried split wood.
Here is the MSP Recon Ready for Fire!
I also decided to use a Flint & Steel and some shavings I made from couple thumb size sticks. After stroking the Steel on a rock a spark caught my Char Cloth, poked it into some grass, Started blowing and got a flame. Quickly I Put it in the Recon, added the shavings and things got blazing pretty quick! Once I knew its was going I started loading fuel through the front port. The Recon like the Core 4 has a really fast start up! Keeping to my first burn tradition I wanted to boil water.
I put a SS pot with 2 cups of 54 degree F water on it and started the timer. The Recon brought 2cups to boil in 4 min 33 seconds! Not bad for my first time using this stove.
I decided to use up what I gathered and the Recon turned into a Fire breathing dragon! It definitely can be a contained mini campfire.
My Overall Impressions??
The MySurvivalPack.com Core Recon Stove has many things going for it! Its capable of everything its Brother the Core 4 can do but in a lighter narrower package! I was pretty impressed with it in its simple form (4walls & burn plate) and can't wait to try it in its fully outfitted form!
IMO its a great bang for your Buck.
With its multitudes of options from just 4 walls & Burn plate to utilizing every given part to make it a side feed Secondary combustion/woodgass stove.
Yes there are other fold flat stoves out there like the Emberlit, Bushbox, tops or Firebox but they aren't a secondary combustion type or as many call it WoodGas stove.
The MSP Core line has just got lots of Value at a very reasonable cost!
It seems if you tell Chad @ MSP what you want he listens. I asked many times for a mini Core 4 and guess what? That review is up next!!
Theres also the Core Thermite and Core 5 on my to do list.
Heres the core family on the front line with some others for size comparison in the back from Bushcraft Essential, WAter Road Outfitters, Emberlit, Firebox, Tops, Siege Stoves, Silverfire stoves, Firemug, Four Dog Stoves ect,,
Thanks for reading!
