Just snagged one off ebay for about $65, brand new. Got to wanting one after hiking with bkduckworth, where we all used his to purify our water. Watched ebay for a couple weeks, and got one well under store price ($129).

Anyone else here got one? Any tips on use? Do you guys pay for the strips, or can you use cheaper strips, like for pools?

Dont use the strips myself. I just do the double dose. You do know its safe to push the button 4 times and still use the solution in 1 quart of water. Just smells a little more like a pool. FYI. I also use Mortons "ice cream" rock salt that you can grab in your walmart or what not in the red box for like $1.50 for 3 lbs. I have ALOT of salt in my house, just one of those things I store that people look at me like am a dam fool. Infact I picked up SIX 1lb iodized salt containers and FOUR 3lb Kosher salt boxes today at Smiths. Again another cashier giving me weird looks. Think the best was when I picked up 120 cans of Stagg chilli back last Sept. That poor lady thought I was off my rocker, but at $0.75 a can, why not stack it deep.

Oh and congrats on the new purifier, mine has saved my bacon more times than I care to think about. Last time is when my new MSR miniworks EX broke my first time out with it. I swear Ill never buy another MSR filter, but I do want another MIOX.

Spoolup's spot on (when, not sure about the 120 cans of Stagg Chilli:D). I don't use the strips anymore. I would just use them to figure out how the solution amount affects different water sources and levels of turbidity. Even with the MIOX, you still need to figure out the best way to "pre-filter" your water sources...several different improvised methods. Battery life is quite good, but if you're going to do any long, deep backcountry trips, I would play it safe and put in new batteries. Biggest advantage is to purifiy larger quantities of water which is much easier than a pump filter.

Last thing, depending on your locations, activities and season, water is one of your primary essentials, so plan to have a backup (Micropur tablets or even one of the quality straw filters such as the Aqua Mira Frontier Pro).

Good idea on the rock salt spoolup:thumbup:

Thanks for the tips. I plan on prolly using just a bandana to prefilter.

i'm still a fan of the MiniWorks EX. screw on a bottle and pump like it's a swedish made something or other.

i like the fact that it takes out chemicals and such where the MIOX does not.

i'm sure the MIOX is a killer set up, i'm just happy with the old tech i guess

I have a Steripen . What is the advantage of one over the other?

Steripen requires clean water (no murkieness) for the light to penetrate. Plus I do not want to have to twirl that thing around for 90 sec, and then have to wipe the bottle threads too.

But the main reason is because all our water around here is brown river water, so the steripen wouldnt work.

So you just dump the Miox solution into dirt-brown water then drink it?

You can, but I prefure to use a bandana/ shemagh etc and prefilter before entering the nalgeen, then use the charged MIOX solution into the water, lid, shake, then crack the seal on the lid, invert and let a little drain thru the threads (steralizes the threads), tighten, and use after a few hours. Just remember to rotate bottles, which I usually carry 2 of anyways, but thats just me.

My MIOX became my favorite water treatment method within 15 min. of my getting mine.

weighs close to nothing and works fantastic.
