I am wondering if any multitool manufacturers would consider making a "school friendly" multitool. No blade, but with basic tools and maybe a specialized one or two. Any ideas on what to include, if you think it its a good idea (or not,) and if you would buy one?

Leatherman Fuse (bladeless) If that floats your boat

Most colleges allow knives of some sort (at least in MO, i'd guess that Michigan might be a little different)
I never needed a knife or multitool in high school. YMMV

What you can do is carry a P38, Sears 4 way screw driver, a small pair of pliers, and a knifeless SAK classic which would probably be lighter than a multitool.

I suppose it would depend on the age of the students, and the region where the school was, whether or not the students would be allowed to carry a knifeless MT. I suspect that some "zero tolerance" school administrators would view awls, screwdrivers, etc., as "stabby pokey" things and still ban knifeless MTs.

I teach, and I encourage my students to carry a MT. But we are talking college students and they actually need a MT if they want to work for me or elsewhere in my department. And the knife is a pretty important blade in the tool, at least for those students who don't carry a folding knife as well. Stuff needs to be cut, a lot, and frequently scissors are not the right tool for the job, a knife is.

I could see a market for a MT with a holder for an "Exacto" type blade. Easy to replace rather than sharpen, and suitable for the fine cutting tasks needed in model building and other art projects

MAHONEY- If I could use a knife, I would carry one separate, but I can't. A multitool would be helpful for everyday use, even without the blade.
O.C.W.- Carrying a P38 and the bladeless SAK I can see, but a pair of pliers is not only weird, but probably quite uncomfortable.
Do you guys think that the Benchmade Houdini rescue tool would be allowed? It is not only practical, but a good plaything/ object to fondle.

College students need MTs, if you live in a dorm room one would come in handy. I wish I had one when I went to college. I didn't know about MTs until I joined the Army.

You could try Leatherman Style PS, it's small but still has some useful tools and no knife.

Since I normally carry a one handed opening locking blade in addition to a SAK, I'd totally be up for a SAK model that had useful tools but was bladeless. Part of the attraction for me would be the novelty of a "knife-less Swiss Army knife" but also the fact that I already carry a quality blade on me, but could make use of the scissors, screwdrivers, nail care tools, corkscrew, etc. While I'm dreaming, take an Alox Pioneer, substitute scissors for the large blade and a nail file tool for the small blade. I'd totally carry that, along with my Spyderco du jour. That would rock!

Thanks Boxant, I didn't know that the Style had no knife.

Just keep in mind that there are two Style models, the first is the Style CS (has a knife), the second is the Style PS (the one without).

The bladeless version of the Vic Classic is a rare and expensive collector's item, and snapping off the blade of a regular classic makes me sad. You could commission an expensive custom version, but that would be expensive. Wenger's Air Traveler is pretty close.

SOG's multitools have user replaceable and swappable tools. You could build a sharpless version, no problem. Their replacement tools are a little expensive, though.

It also depends on what you mean by "school". For example, at my university, a professor recommended that we purchase SAK's, and a grad student friend of mine carries a Leatherman Wave and a large Sebenza. That wouldn't float elsewhere, and maybe not even in other departments. It really depends.
