For quite some time the thought of buying a custom knife or dealing with a maker was the farthest thing from my mind. Too many threads in GBU of customers sending money and never hearing from the maker again.
As it was so bluntly pointed out to me though, to read the actual threads there and throughout the forum, crooked makers are such a small, tiny minority as to probably make up less than 1% of makers.
Anyways, having read the famous Newt Livesay thread did give me something to think about. Seeing Darrell Parent of Mt Sequoyah Knives go through as much trouble as he did to fix problems that he didnt even cause is one of the prime examples of the good makers around. I thought, you know if I am going to step back into customs in any way and deal with makers, he might be a good one to try.
Imagine my luck, at the Tulsa Gunshow today, Darrell was there and had a table setup. I spoke with him for a few minutes and he seems genuinely like a nice guy. He had some nice knives too. I bought a knife from him and felt really good about it. The model I bought kind of reminds me of an old Livesay design (expected since he learned making from Newt). He had a few different types of knives as well, and they all seem really nice and quite a bargain considering his prices are equal to or less than some production prices. He does very good work.
