Anyone been up Mt. Washington in New Hampshire lately? Are there water sources on the way? Haven't decided on the trail, but either the Ammonoosuc Ravine trail or Jewell trails sounds appealing. I'm going to be in the area next week on business and was planning to test my legs over the weekend by doing an out and back day hike. I will be camping off the 302 at Crawford Notch state park.

I have heard about the weather and am planning a healthy psk in my camelbak.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Most routes up the white's peaks are natorious for lack of water. Either confirm water sources or hump a truck load.

No place for whimpy footwear. Plan for the worst.

I've done the presidential range traverse twice. Once in February, took 3 days, 2 nights. So plenty of snow to melt for water. The second time was in the summer, did it in a day the reverse direction. I'm pretty sure I carried a 3 liter camelback and a liter nalgene. If memory serves me I didn't have any problems finding water, especially from some of the lakes higher up. I guess it all depends on your route.

First trip I went north to south starting on the airline trail to Washington ending at Pinkham Notch. Second trip I started at Crawford notch but bypassed Washington and ended where I started the previous trip. I remember there is a lake with some sort of lodge on the route up from Crawford. I don't think you'll have a problem. I'd post some pictures but this was 7 years ago when digital wasn't common.

I've never tried the Jewell trail, but the Ammonoosic crosses/parallels several water sources. We've had a lot of rain, so if you are hitting it weekend, you might find it kinda rutted. But becuase the trails are so popular, I'm not sure I'd trust the water. :( And expect it to full of humans. :( :(

And they aren't joking about the weather. I live about an hour west of it, just barely into Vermont. Be ready for it to drop 30 degrees by the time you get to the peak, and bring rain gear. And sun block and shades.

I have been up Mt. Washington twice in the winter starting at the Pinkham Notch like ilbruche. I really had no problem finding water at Pinkham as there are designated areas for drinking water.. If you fill up a 3 or 4 liter Cammelback or a lot of water bottles in your pack you should have no trouble.. Past Tuckerman's into the Lake of the Clouds (I think that is what ilbruche is thinking of) there is a lake, so water is easy to find.. The hike isn't too bad but when I went up our site was limited..

Hope this helps,
