Mtech

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: Yes, they are. However, you'll get some folks in here who've bought one, beat on it, and it somehow stood up to the abuse. So, good luck finding one of those.

I don't know about their folders but I have a tanto neck knife I picked up cheap. Supposedly 440c. I don't know if it is or not. Takes a pretty good edge and holds it ok. G10 scales and kydex sheath were a plus. It's in my toolbag. Works great for cutting fiberglass ductboard. It's been worth the $11 I paid for it.

If you want a high quality, low cost folder, Kershaw is hard to beat.

I've got 4 of the Kershaw imports ( Cryo 1 and 2, Tremor and Compound) and they're all great knives.

Are cheap knives like m tech considered awful when it comes to pocket knives

I own a few MTech knives, and none were absolute turds out of the box. One was off-center enough that the blade would scrape the liner constantly, and any adjustment caused the liner lock not to engage reliably. It is in a landfill somewhere now. However, I have another of their folders that is flawless, and the couple of fixed blades are just fine as well. I'm sure that they would stand up to any appropriate level of use I would subject them to. In fact, the MTech "Outlander" machete I received as a gift is actually quite nice in terms of workmanship. Blade durability remains to be seen. But going back to MTech folding knives, they are more about form than function.

That depends on budget, material preferences and intended use. For "high value" folders, especially USA-made, it's hard to beat Kershaw, and Buck has some nice ones too. Spyderco, CRKT, Cold Steel and SOG also have some very reasonably priced folders, although they tend to have designs that most people either love or hate. Once you head north of the $100 mark, that opens the door to higher end knives from those manufacturers as well as many more brands that use superior materials.

There is no good reason to spend more than $15-20 on an MTech folder, or most other gun-brand knives. Remington, Winchester and Smither & Wesson are generally no better than MTech, nor are similar brands like Tac-Force.

Cheap knives check out the Chinese Spydercos, the Byrd knives, Kershaw, Sanrenmu 763, 710, Ganzo G704, Enlan EL-01, EL-03, etc

Majority of people here stand by these names: Spyderco, Benchmade, Kershaw, Zero Tolerance, and Chris Reeves Knives. There are many other great options, but I find these to be the most discussed folders. Fixed blades are a whole different story.

However, theres always gonna be "that guy" that will try to convince you that all you need is an Opinel or a SAK...

This is exactly it. I can't imagine paying $10-$15 for an M-Tech when one can pick up a Kershaw, that is of actual quality, for $15-$30 in their entry-level lines.

Ontario's folders are quite good :D the utilitac 2 and rat 1 (or 2) theyere cheap yet quality blades
