I'm so proud of my boy. At his graduation tonight from yellow to orange belt, he was named Student of the Month. So for the next 30 days, instead of his orange belt, he will be wearing a special red, white, and blue one.

I'm super Type A and tend to have a hard time giving enough positive reenforcement(I'm working on it), and saw this as a perfect opportunity to make an even bigger deal out of it. I pulled out a black 511 I was planning giving him, muddy 511, overrun 511, HRLM, and my spare RMD and let him pick whichever one he liked best. The ninja in him liked the black 511 but the RMD proved irresistible. I know it will serve him well for many years.

He has baseball and I have Muay Thai tomorrow but I really hope we have time to go to grampa's house for some fire prep with his new knife, boys night with nature.

they actually call it "total defense" for ages 8-14 or so. Its like 90% Muay Thai, 10% Judo. They also have kids jiu jitsu, but he was way more interested in striking. He is 10 now and eating it up.

The mid-teenagers can test into the adult classes when they are good enough. For adults they have jiu jitsu and Muay Thai separate, optional Judo on Saturdays, and "competition team" MMA you have to try out for. I just do the Muay Thai and we train in tshirts and Sprawl-type stretchy fight shorts

just curious when did Muay Thai start using a belt system?

It is used as an incentive for the kids. You try to instill in them the motivation to advance, strive to reach the next level. Also they see it pleases the parents when they make it to the next level.

That is excellent for your child. My son is into physical fitness and am proud of him for studying/practicing physical fitness, healthy lifestyle's, vitamin's and supplement's, something, I was not encouraged to do at his age and led to poor choices later in life. I think it's imperative to get children motivated to make these healthy choices so that it may benefit them later in life.

Congrats to your boy! That seems like excellent positive reinforcement to me! He made the right choice with the RMD.

He is really excited because now he gets to learn clinching, knees and elbows. We did all that stuff from day 2. They focus on balance, weight transfer, and basic strikes until the have the aptitude and athleticism for advanced striking safely. I'm excited too because now I can work with him without worrying about what he's not supposed to be doing in class. 2 more belts and he'll be freestyle sparring for a while almost every class. My 3 yo girlie loves to go to " boom boom's house" and she'll probably start as soon as they let her. She's like a tiny little me only way cuter. :) They have one of those skintone upper torso things in the lobby and she works it over every time she goes

Congratulations! Linxx is a great school and they don't hand out awards lightly. My son started when he was 4, your daughter will love it. They are great with kids (and adults too).

Congrats -- that's awesome. Kickboxing is a lot of fun and is a great workout. Starting them young in combat sports ensures that their reaction times are quicker in the future and makes them more comfortable under fire.

Quick suggestion: invest in some better sparring gloves for him. Those vinyl-coated foam gloves don't soften blows NEARLY enough. I would look at Windy, Fairtex, Twins or even Hayabusas, and let the other parents know that better, more protective gear is out there to keep the entire class safe. Cheers!

I have 16 oz Fairtex gloves and I love them. He has really worn those out so he could use some more. I'll have to check that out. His shinguards are a lot different from mine too. They slide on like soccer ones. He says they work fine. They don't do much sparring yet and they are still fairly uncoordinated/unfocused or whatever you call it. It is really exciting to see when they start to "get it" though. He will definitely need new gear before he moves up into the advanced classes in 4 months or so.

It was raining really hard Saturday so we did some firestarting in the fireplace. It was his first time batonning and he really liked it. The RMD definitely did its part. he beat it into the bricks 4 or 5 times on accident and it had no visible effect on the edge at all. And we took the airsoft M16 out in the rain and it shot way better than I ever would have guessed. Awesome weekend

Congrats to your boy. Sounds like he is loving Muay Thai and his new knife.

That is awesome! Congrats to your son and congrats to you for having such a talented kid!! Great choice with the RMD!
