Mud and sheaths don't mix!!!

Hey guys, my first post here and I'm really in a pickle. I have a Cold Steel SRK that I bought used recently and I loaned it to my 13 y.o. and he brought it back with mud on the hilt. But the worst is that he just shoved the knife into the sheath. And now there is mud as far down into the sheath as I can see with a flashlight. First question, how serious is this really? And secondly, is there a way to clean it out without ruining the sheath? It's the older style nylon and leather sheath, not the newer kydex type. Thanks, all.

Leather shrinks when it dries, but theoretically you could just rinse it out and sheath the knife while it dries and it'll just "form fit" itself to the knife, leaving you with a good snug fit.

I agree what Grease said - just wash it out good.
You get leather wet all the time to tool it.
It's when it stays wet too long were the rot starts to happen.
After you do clean it out maybe condition it with something?
They make a leather conditioner - but you probably don't have that? And I would not go buy it just for one sheath?
But maybe you have some shoe wax? Polish that would work - saddle soap to rub it down with.
After cleaning put some air to it - like put it in front of fan for an hour or two. Air will help dry it quicker.
Should be fine..... good luck. ( Make the young man who got it muddy clean it?):)

And WELCOME! to the forums.....

This is why I bit the bullet and spent $100 or so on the tools I needed to make my own kydex sheaths, many factory sheaths are next to useless for anything other than posing for pictures for the internet...

I'm not sure what this has to do with the OP, but you raise a point...you can make a sheath out of plastic in about the time it takes to rinse the mud off a leather one.

It's actually a good segue to another question I had about buying the new sheath for the CS SRK seperately. But maybe I should do some reading here first.
