Hey does anyone know what the factory edge angle is on the first run, the thin ones, of mud mutts? Ive been carrying and using mine for about a year now and all though its still sharp enough to chop wood it could use a touch up on the edge, thanks

Unfortunately, each knife's edge angle is slightly different. I believe 20 degrees each side or 40 degrees inclusive is what most Busse and Bussekin knives are intended to be. If you have a Sharpmaker is recommend some minor re profiling. You can always just do about 50 strokes on each side with each stone on the 40 degree inclusive setting.

If you have a Work Sharp I recommend just using the 40 degree inclusive setting.

To me, at least looking at the tip on the many I have seen personally it is more like 30 degrees per side or 60 inclusive. Granted the straight portion of edge could be 20 40 as you say.....

For the most they are 20 on each side -- but I believe you're correct -- towards the tip the angle is definitely more obtuse. Whether that's intended or not -- I don't know. Easy to fix to each individual consumer's liking. Better to have more steel to work with and customize.

Whatever the actual edge angle is, Rob's advice is sound - set it at 20/40 or at 15/30 and never look back  But yeah, the angle varies as you go from belly to tip. Here's a couple shots of one of mine from the factory:

Really ? I would think the thinner one would be a serious cutter.

It's subjective -- but I found the Safety Mutt to be quite capable enough for all cutting tasks but significantly stronger than the Mud Mutt. It's essentially like a Ratmandu with less weight. That to me is quite perfect. The Mud Mutt is fantastic too --- don't get me wrong. If you want a great slicer check out the Hairy Carry or Scrapivore CG. What am I saying --- get them all
