Hello Hogs,

I hope no one minds that this is an inquiry about Swamprat vs Scrapyard knives -- especially since we're all family. Now that enough Mud Mutts are out there I'd love it if someone can try to compare these blades. I'm mostly interested to see if there is any valid argument for choosing a Mud Mutt over a RMD. Yes I agree, both is better than one -- however the budget allows for only one. Is there anything that the Mud Mutt can do that the RMD can't? Share your thoughts please.

I have the 1st and last: RMD & Mudd Mutt. The grind angles are about the same so if you put the same edge on each they'll have similar cutting performance up to the point where the extra thickness of the RMD adds resistance.
I prefer the RMD handle-shape, fits the hand better with the hump in the right place. Also i prefer the higher grind on the RMD and the slightly thicker blade for that much more lateral strength. I prefer the enlarged choil, but I'll soon modify a Mudd Mutt to suit me better in that regard. And the RMD clip-point is narrower for better tip-penetration and drilling holes.

All that said, the Mudd Mutt is by no means uncomfortable to hold, provides excellent retention, and the ResC handle is much better in the extreme cold. It's also substantially lighter (6 oz vs 9-10) and with good balance it is more nimble in hand. Perhaps it will grow on me for these reasons, but for now it plays 2nd fiddle to the RMD. But with the thin edge it is vastly superior to the 511 in cutting performance. My $0.02

Awesome, thanks for your input. Unfortunately, that's what I thought I'd hear/read. I have a Mud Mutt on the way. I have big hands so I was a little concerned about the ergo of the Mud Mutt. One thing I should note though is that I don't really want my BK-2 to be rendered obsolete, which I fear the RMD might do. I'm considering selling/trading my Mud Mutt + Sheath for a RMD. I'm not quite sure though. I have a user NMSFNO, ASHBM, BK-2, Scrapivore CG, and Victorinox Hercules Multi Tool -- all of these are items I don't want to render obsolete -- so if anyone can recommend a Mud Mutt or a RMD to fit in with this line up, that would be amazing.

Rob, The RMD was one of my biggest disappointment in knife purchases. I have next to never heard anything negative about this knife. I also have larger than average hand and the RMD felt tiny. I really wanted to like it.....I do have plans for MudMutt in the near future. I will be interested to see how you go with the MM. Good luck, David

I have a knife with the Mudder handles on it, I can take a comparison pic if you want to see. :)

I've got to take a few leather pics so its not a problem.

The RMD is the closest to a perfect knife in ergonomics and shape for my medium hands. Unfortunately, it is just a bit long for EDC for me.

You can't go wrong with the Scrapper 5 or RMD for an all around utility/survival knife. If weight is not an issue I would try the RMD. If I could only have 1, RMD would be it!

I'm really glad I read your response David. I know that I have magnum handles on my NMSFNO and those are just right for my hands. So if the RMD is slimmer/smaller then it would be less than perfect. I've read that the Mud Mutt is hard use/finesse knife that is about the largest one could effectively go and still call it an EDC knife. That sounds good to me!

Sure, that would be great! As always I appreciate any help. :)

The RMD handle has some good ergo's, nice size for some extended slicing, and its either micarta to G10, win/win

The Mudder handles are my favorites of the Res C, they are a little thicker but smaller than the RMD's. ResC tends to stick to my hands and rub hot spots. So far no one has told me I have soft hands ;) I am a full time leather worker so soft hands is not an issue. ResC loves to grab a nice callous and rub it raw. Most evident on choppers, ever had an indian burn, yea, like that.

I'll add. My hands are "medium", size 7.5 surgical gloves.
