Well, my last deployment, my wife and son did a couple of 5k mud runs; I just did my first. We just did the 5k, it was the Atlanta Merrell/Suburu Down & Dirty mud run and I must say it was well organized. My son ran with me for the first mile or so and then smoked the run...he came in 64 out of 1594. I was in the upper 200's and pretty happy; much better for my age group (42). I think if my son hadn't ran with my that first mile and half, he would have ranked in the top 50...not bad for a 13 year old!

These are pretty challenging with some decent obstacles and plenty of mud. If anything these are pretty good endurance tests and a lot of fun. Just wondering if any other WSS'ers have done these mud runs. We have a few more planned this year and they are a lot of fun.

Pure awesome! My buddy did a tuff mudder earlier this year, I have to do the one next year! Glad you have fun.

Looks like a blast, I do a 36 mile endurance event( 30,000 Ft. elevation gain and loss ) every year, and if it rains it turns into one of those "mudders" if that counts.

They are a lot of fun, but it helps if you’re in moderate shape. I was running with my son at a good pace for the first two miles and half-dozen obstacles. Once we hit this straight up hill, I ran out of gas and my son bolted pass. I stayed about seven minutes behind him from that point. The varied terrain was great; we even had to run across a granite area that was fun to sprint and hop across. I can say that I need a little more conditioning!

That sounds like a mega-ironman! In Wenatchee, WA, they do an annual “Ridge to River” relay…sounds very similar but that elevation difference is a serious butt-kicker! My wife is really interested in some of the other “adventure” races. She just found a 22 mile canoe, bike, trek and orienteering course that she’s really interested in.

These events really keep you conditioned for our other outdoor activities. This next year we start planning our Appalachian trail hikes. These are good conditioning events and really a lot of fun. These events attract a good group of people as well…

The event I have done is called the "Rachel Carson Challenge", I'm able to keep up with the front of the pack for about 15 miles before I start falling back ( I'm 5'6" so it's all about the Mathmatics in relation to stride and fatigue, I'm taking way more steps) after that, I try to pace to come in just before the finish time.
