What's the quality, reputation, build, materials like?

They have a lot of big practical cheap knives. I have never seen one up close.

I've got a Muela Kodiak in Sandvik steel. Fit and finish is very good and it is comfortable in hand. I really like that steel, tough and easy to sharpen.

Well respected Spanish manufacturer who's been around a long time, certainly around lunch my enough to have many of their designs copied in Pakistan.

Muela has been my favorite of the Spanish makers since the mid '80s. I know, that's just me, but they've been around for a long time. Overall build quality is generally good, and better than some other Spanish makers, designs are well-executed, saw-back blades will actually saw, you get the picture.

When I lived in Spain, I took a trip to Toledo (kinda have too if you're a knife enthusiast!). Muela was well represented at every cutlery shop in the walled city.

My father owns a few and the build quality seems very good. I am not familiar with steel performance though.

Their knives are good work knives. Heat treatment is great usually and the leather sheaths are top notch for the price point. Performance wise it totally depends on the steel. The old Muela Kodiak (~2012) with bronze guard was available in a 14CN28 version with a green Micarta handle and was considered a good alternative to the Fällkniven F1 because it offered similar performance with a better sheath and a nicer handle.

My Dad gave me one like this about 20 years ago:

I bought one of these at a pawn shop for $20 when I was a kid. Probably late 80s. I beat the hell out of that thing and it just laughed it off.

I have a little bowie shaped necker with stag point handle by Muela. It's an absolutely lovely knife. Fit and finish is great (sheath is top notch, too) and the stag point has the nicest polish I ever saw. And they left some of the scratches the deer made when rubbing his antlers. I like that. Muela's production is quite hunting centered. They have a lot of interesting knives (from the looks of them). Generally speaking, I find their designs a bit boisterous (as with other Spanish makers). The only real downside is their preference for low grade stainless, like 440A. They are not alone in that league, see other great Spanish brands like Cudeman, Nieto, Aitor (all worth a look) and... Puma (German) who has some of its offering made in Spain. It seems to me the Spanish makers focus on quality fit & finish rather than worrying with the latest super steel. Nothing wrong with that, their knives seem to get heavy use in the field, their customers are happy, so you can actually take the plunge on a (non expensive) model and get a taste.

Victorinox dealers in Malaysia carry a range of Muela fixed blades. Comes very sharp and the steel is VERY stainless and easy to sharpen, said to be MoVa 1.4116 :

Was told that Muela is actually the official Victorinox Distributor in Spain, and are also currently supplying Victorinox with a new range of hunting knives, manufactured by Muela but rebranded as Victorinox :

Muela fixed blades are very good for the money IMHO. The ones I have are all good knives at a modest price point.

Boker Plus fixed blades are similar values as well.

I have read the same from reputable sources.

I'd check YouTube for more info. The handles on the less expensive models are prone to breakage. Their higher end models appear to be better built.

I have the Mirage, one of their lower end models. It has a beautiful blade but the handle is kind of "spongy" and doesn't look like it would hold up to serious usage.

Just my impression, which some of those videos confirm.
