i read this on a web site and i don't know what 'Moly-Vanadium stainless steel' is. can anyone please tell me that this steel is?

<quote> Our most popular knife, the Muela Rebeco 9A has a 3 5/16" blade and measures 7 5/8" overall. The handle is genuine stag and the handle is made of Moly-Vanadium stainless steel.

The Muela knives I've seen (and been interested in) use 440C, but I think I've seen one or two in AUS8. I don't understand though why they say the "handle" is stag and the "handle" is moly-V steel.... might be a misprint

it leads me to think that it is not 440C. that is a good steel. if i had a good steel i would say it. so the clue that i get is moly-V steel has no snob appeal. why use it?

i think its 440A. all the web sites i checked out said the same moly-V steel. none said 440C

There are a lot of steels with molybdenum and vanadium, but 440A isn't one of them. Neither is 440C. AUS8 does have both, so it could be that. Or it could be any of a dozen others. Beyond that, I'm no help at all :o

It is a chinese steel like the one Byrd uses. The Byrd steel is 8Cr13MoV. Better than 440A not as good as 440C. I consider it a pretty decent cheaper stainless like the Sandvick the moras use.

Nope. They use 8Cr13MoV. The alloy is closer to AUS8, but they run it at RC 60, a couple of points harder than AUS8 is usually run. It works quite well at that hardness, and holds an edge much better that AUS6.
