Hello Everyone,

A close friend of mine is contemplating the purchase of a fixed blade fighting knife that is acceptable under Texas law (5 1/2 inch single sided blade max). He asked my opinion about a Muella brand of knife made in Spain. The link to it is below.

http://www.knife-source.com/military/tactical-knife02.html

In my experience the quality of Spanish knives and guns varies from model to model as well as brand to brand.

Does anyone have any experience with this one?

To me, it smacks of the American made TOPS knife brand.

Any opinions are welcome.

I have an older 7" tanto knife by Muela with a 440 blade and it is an okay knife. The fit and finish are marginal and the 440 pretty much sucks but it did come with a heavy duty leather sheath. For the money I paid for it I'd buy another one just to abuse it like I have this one. From what I've seen of there newer line of knives there quality has come up quite a bit, but they like to imitate other peoples designs. Just my .02.

I've got a PIK-AS, 4" Skinner(they list it as a "survival" knife).

440c, kraton handle with nylon guard. For the whole $40 I paid in zellars it makes a nice prybar knife. Have to get it moved into my new car, used to live in my glovebox.

Muela knives (and many European production knives in general) range from inexpensive novelty knives that are absolute crap to useful hunting/utility knives that are very good in terms of quality. I have 2 Muela hunting knives which are pretty decent knives and I like them alot. They're fit and finish is even better than some of the German and Argentine made hunting knives by Böker. They are by no means akin to American made specialty knives like Benchmade or Spyderco, but they do have some very nice and practical pieces.

Besides Muela, the only other Spanish brands I currently own are by Andújar, Exposito and Aitor. Yes, you do find your share of imitations even among the most well known Spanish production companies. Aitor is famous for their versions of multi-blade pocket knives like the ones pioneered by Victorinox and Wenger of Switzerland, however, Aitor supplies their knives to the Spanish Army as well as other European and South American nations. Andújar and Exposito produce commercial type navajas, fixed blades and pocket folders to the world market, but some are actually very nice. Now, if their modern folders could only reach the level of quality coming out of Italy these days, Spain could be a serious source of high quality European blades.

I bought a Mualla fixed blade about 16 years ago that was at the time spanish military issue...I beat the living crap out of that knife for years carrying it camping and hunting, including repeatedly chopping down small sapplings 3-4 inches in diameter and the knife just ate it all up. You could put a nasty edge on it and it would hold it forever.

Anthony,

That Muela in particular is double edged. Unfortunately, most websites don't list that fact. I owned 3 Hornets and recently traded one off. If your friend is still interested after finding out it it not TX legal, shoot me an email and let's see if I can't cave hime a few bucks. :D I personally really like the knife but it no longer fills a particular need. Like the Confederate and others have said, it's a great knife for the price.

I've had good experiences with Spanish knives. I have models from Muela, Joker and Cudeman. Now they're not going to compare to a custom, however imo they offer a great value in the sub $100 price range. My Muela is a skinner and it is surprisingly well made for the price. It's handle is symetrical, well finished and ergonomic for skinning. Check out this website for a good selection of Spanish knives: http://www.cutlerytogo.com/spanishknives.html They are a good dependable company to deal with.

Here's a pic of my Muela skinner.

Muela offers solid quality and their knives are made of good steel. Since their pricing is very reasonable, you can hardly go wrong with their products.

I was looking at a stag handled dirk to wear with my kilt when I found this Muella;

Mine is like the one with a crown stag handle.

They are a lot cheaper than a custom stag dirk and they do have decent blades. Most of the this series are wall hangers, dress up and collector knives so they do not see much actual stabbing or chopping. They have 440 stainless blades so if you do actually use one it would perform pretty well.

First of all the guys that run this webpage can't figure out what they want for this knife....60 bucks or 70. Secondly, Muela may make some acceptable knives but I can think of a dozen or so, in this size and price range, from CS, SOG, Becker, and other well known, reputable makers that I'd buy first. Just pick up a Russell, Brigade Quartermaster catalog (plus numerous others) and thumb through it. IMHO, most of these Spanish knives are junk. My 2 cents.

2 cents is too much for your humble opinion, IMHO. The few Spanish knives I own have held together well and they serve the purpose I bought them for. I see value in that. Junk is something that won't do the job it was purchased to do.

As I said they aren't going to compare to a nice custom, but of course they also cost a fraction of the price. Here's another Spanish knife I like. It is made by Joker.

Muela knives are fine, sometimes very fine. Although there have been occasions when they are unfairly maligned.

For those of us who may possess one or more Muela knives, we know better! :)

Muela is a god brand. But the cheapest models are not good. Are only for kids. But it has a lot of great and good quality knives.
You can try a Muela Jabalí, it is a beast :

I"ve got one from a fella in Idaho that "pimps" them out with a nice guard and stag handles and custom leather. It is a very fine knife imho. Holds a good edge and seems easy enough to sharpen. He said it is there version of 440v steel. Seems to be a good steel and well made knife that is made a bit nicer with what this fella has done to it. keepem sharp

Muela Tanto is a very good Knife. You can see the photos of this review:

I had one of their small bowie knives years ago.
Very nice knife. That bugger took a beating and kept a good edge.

New here, glad I found a thread like this. I have been looking at mulela knives too, they make many beutiful designs I think. But their price is somtimes so low I feel afraid it might be a crap knife. Also they don't seem to be very famous, not much reviews and forum topics about them.

I see people say their expensive models are mostly good so I wonder if this bowie knife BW-16 is any good. It goes from around $85 at knife center.

If you scroll down on this link you can see more into about it. Its 440c steel.
