I've got a Cobalt Special coming my way in a trade and I haven't been able to find a lot of info on people's thoughts and experience with this steel.

Any idea about the hardness? Edge retention? Ease of sharpening compared to something like VG-10 or 154CM or D2?

Just wondering. Thanks.

Man, it's been a while since I had the Cobalt Special out. I seem to recall it having decent edge retention without being terrible to sharpen. Overall, it didn't really thrill me, but I'm an S90V guy.

I too have an S90V blade that I got recently and holy mackerel does it hold an edge! Not too many compare to that.

I'm hoping that the Cobalt will be a good user anyway.

S90V is a great steel for sure. :D

Doesn't compare to s90v or cts 20cp that's for sure. But I've use my mule in the kitchen for about a year now and only sharpened it once.

I carry the Cobalt Special with Halpern G10 scales in a kydex sheath in my car. The Mule came out of the box from SFO as sharp as any knife I've ever seen - truly dangerously sharp. I put it on my WEPS and gave it a nice 35 degree polished bevel and got it screaming sharp. I've used it for a few misc tasks from the car (e.g., maintenance, yard work, Scout hike), but haven't stress tested it. The edge has held up well under moderate usage.
