Hi,

I recently purchased a MT01 and MT03. I ordered some scales (#5) from Halpern Titanium and received them today. I got a pair attached to the MT03 no problem. The problem lies with the MT01 - The knife holes are too small. Looks like I need to ream them out to 3/8". I am not well versed with steel and need some advice. Where do I get a carbide bit ( I assume this is what I need?) locally so I can get these scales fitted today? What else should I look out for?

Thanks for the help. Here are a few photos of the MT03 scales (Brown)

I know when I put the Halpern scales on my swick 4, Both holes had some slag build up from the cutting process. I was able to quickly smooth it out with the dremmel tool and fit great. Next step would of been a drill bit and drill press...(hand drills tend to "walk" the bit, causing one ugly hole.) Any hardware store should have bits you'll need. Grab some cutting oil while you're at it.

Nice choice on the scales and Mule.

Get a cobalt bit. Go slow and use some oil (not wd40)

This. Get a carbide bit from KK.com and use something like Do-Drill. Be careful with the carbide bits. The ones I've used are VERY brittle due to their hardness and can easily be broken on material as hard as the MT01.

I guess there were some stonewashed blades produced at SFO?

That's certainly possible. I was referring to the hole pattern/sizes. It was actually a pretty long while back... :) Just ordered a pair of MT21 Mules - what a great program...
