After my cornstalk firesaw, Ia Woodsman mentioned to me he had been wanting to try mullen and basswood for the firesaw method.
That planted the idea in my head, and I had to give it a go.
I used the more traditional method as most use with bamboo, as the materals are much stouter then the cornstalk. This gave me the ability to really get after it and build up heat quickly.
This method sure does kick your butt, as it is very labor intensive, but requires no cordage and very little prep. I would say the proper dry, seasoned materals are very important to the success of this method. (and being in shape helps to!)
Can't say this is my favorite method, but it does work (at least in my basement! next to try it in the bush)
