Mullen/Basswood Firesaw

After my cornstalk firesaw, Ia Woodsman mentioned to me he had been wanting to try mullen and basswood for the firesaw method.

That planted the idea in my head, and I had to give it a go.

I used the more traditional method as most use with bamboo, as the materals are much stouter then the cornstalk. This gave me the ability to really get after it and build up heat quickly.

This method sure does kick your butt, as it is very labor intensive, but requires no cordage and very little prep. I would say the proper dry, seasoned materals are very important to the success of this method. (and being in shape helps to!)

Can't say this is my favorite method, but it does work (at least in my basement! next to try it in the bush)

Very nice!

I have not done the firesaw before as I always thought it to be a tropics method based on the materials. Have you done it or are you aware of any other combination of woods?

I suspect eastern red cedar and boxelder may work too as they are easier woods with mullien and the hand drill.

Cool stuff, thanks for sharing. Chris

I have only done it with this combo, cornstalk, and bamboo. But I am getting more and more into the characteristics of the materals and then trying it! it keeps me busy and is easy to gather materals and try later.

Aawesome work Scab!!

I think you got just about every friction fire wrapped up!

I wouldn't say that, I have several on video, but am master of none!

The hand drill kicks my butt, I have done it about a dozen times now, but I have failed ALOT!

You are not forgiven for your shoddy camera work, thanks so much for your time and effort.

wonder if yucca could replace mullin, someone else mentioned cedar for the board.

high energy fire

I hear ya. I meant that you had done them, not mastered them all.

Poor wording on my part bro.

The hand drill has kicked my ass as well, not that I have tried it as often as I should...:o

Keep up the great work bro:thumbup:

It shouldn't - doesn't normally! :D

IMHO, the secret to the hand drill is that you must do it frequently. When my hands were in good shape, I used to do 4-5 coals a day. Today (Jan. 8/10), I'd probably be hard pressed to get one coal, although I've had a few beers, so I may give it a shot. :D

Doc

ETA: Gave it a shot, results here.
