My brother in law in not a knife guy so this will be his first, hopefully, EDC.

At first I thought about getting a SAK trekker or fireman. but not I'm thinking leatherman wave. price is a bit diff. but not to be taken into consideration. which one, or other would you suggest.

My father carried the old wave up until he lost it overboard while fishing a couple months ago (he was pissed), now he carries the new wave. He put/puts both of them through a beating and they still take it. He uses it every day.

I've carried SAKs but 3 months ago, I picked up the new style wave. I've been wearing it on my belt ever since; you don't even know it's there. I'll take the wave over an SAK any day. Locking tools, longer blade, PLIERS etc.

Go with the wave and don't look back.

He's never had a Swiss army knife or Leatherman?! That's cruel and unusual punishment! ;) Buy him both! :)

If he's not used to carrying a knife, the wave may be a big first step since it's going to be heavier than a Swiss army knife. That aside, both are good choices for a first knife. He might like it if you got him the same one (whichever that may be) that you use.

I think if he's never EDC'd anything like a tool, something big or "noticeable" will not be easy to get used too.

if he's not a knife guy a bigger type blade, especially one that is made for one hand operation might be "intimidating" and he may not carry it.

traditional swiss-army-knives have a "friendly" and useful appeal and I'd suggest one of them. A regular sized Multitool is nice with regular pliers and all but kinda big for non-EDC people I think.

Is your brother-in-law handy with tools? If he tinkers a lot, then the Wave has the "wow" factor edge over the SAK. Maybe even go for a SwissTool Spirit X for even more "wow". Heheh. ;)

With a very similar tool set to the Wave you could also look at a Leatherman Blast. Still an excellent tool and normally quite a bit cheaper.

I have all three:) Of them, the Wave is probably the most used. HOWEVER, I need pliers regularly. Paired with a nice pocket clip, it'll go with him without much trouble:)

If he's an outdoors kind of guy, it's really tough to beat the Fireman. Personally, I'm not a fan of soft serrations on my main blade, so I would go with the regular non-one hand opening version. Besides, you already get the serrated belt cutter:)

Now, I know a lot of people love the Trekker. I'm a fan as well, but I'll take the Fireman over it for two reasons. First, I like having a dedicated rope cutter/bread knife. Secondly, I don't typically carry a SAK without a corkscrew. I know, I know...who needs a CS out in the woods? Well a guy that brings a bottle of wine does;). Besides, the can opener can turn a philips screw. A T-handle philips CANNOT open a bottle of wine;)

If you are looking for a little less costly tool, Gareth's idea is great. The blast, Fuse, or Kick would be great choices as an intro to multi-tools without breaking the bank. You do lose the one hand feature, though.

Good luck:)

Hi there,
This is my first post to the forum, although I joined a year ago, but I just re-discovered the forum :-)
My first multitool was a Surge, and getting one of the largest/ heaviest/ beefiest tool makes every other tool/SAK seem like a lightweight. I still carry it almost everyday, but I also have a Blast which is used more at home. I think I got over the shock of carrying around such a large tool in a few weeks. I wear it horizontally in the nylon sheath and now I don't even notice it's there until I need it. I would still like to get something a little smaller like a Wave/Charge, since although I have the Blast, I still prefer the one hand opening main blades (just in case one hand gets pinned by a boulder or something ;-)

I prefer to have a tool that offers me some options even though I don't use all of them on a daily basis and I think that the Surge/wave design offers the perfect combination of tools. Anyways good luck.

Thanks everyone for the input! I guess I forgot to update everyone on my decision. I bought him a vic farmer and a wave. Not being a knife guy I figure both were good options.
