Hey there im looking for a recommendation on a knife/tool thats a alternative to a hachet.

Seen a few but can't decide.

Ontario Spec Plus SP8

Silky Nata

Becker CM-BK3

CRKT M.A.K. 1

EOD Robotics Breacher Bar

and probably not CUMA Battle Cleaver

I think theres a few more, but any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I had an SP8. I found it lacking in chopping power. would have made a fair shovel though. out of your list I'd probably vote on the Silky. They make good yard and garden tools and probably understand pretty well what they are building. Not that the others don't but there is often a noticeable gap between practicality and tactic-ality in a lot of these designs. IMO.

I seem to be chiming in on a lot of these lately haha:

Hmmm might just go with the breacher bar, the others are quite pricey. Does anyone know where to get the Breacher Bar perferably in canada?

I'd sure like to know why people are so interested in the "prying" ability of knives. I don't get it. Knives cut. Crowbars and prybars pry. Hammers hammer. Axes and machetes chop...

"Jack of all trades, master of none" comes to mind, using a knife as a true multi-tool. Don't have room for a full tool kit but might need the functionality of a single-purpose device? There are knives that will serve those purposes, but it's always a compromise. I have an Ontario SP8, as well as a no-name copy with a shorter blade and different handle material. The copy, being smaller, resides in a kit in my car, while the SP8 sits on a shelf in my basement. I have no doubt that it could come in handy in some situations, but as it stands now, I don't go anywhere or do anything that calls for such a big knife. Still, I like the idea of a big chopper that can also hammer, pry, etc.

If a person doesn't routinely have a need for each individual, specialized tool, a big knife that can fit many roles isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's just not going to be the best tool for the job.

Most khukuri fit the bill.

Agreed!

Further, in order from lower to higher price: CRKT Chogan or Kangee T-Hawk, Scrapyard 911, Swamp Rat Kill Devil Sniper Hawk, Busse Team Gemini LB, Fehrman Extreme Judgement, Busse Straight Handle Battle Mistress CG.

Usually I carry a Victorinox Cadet and I like the fact that it can fill multiple roles. Looking to upgrade to a leatherman or something......

Pry = get a crowbar
Chop = get an axe or a hatchet

For everythin else that needs cutting get a Case Peanut ... or a Swayback Jack!

I would suggest you look at the Kabar Becker BK-9, Kabar Cutlass Machete, Condor Pack Golok and Condor Village Parang. These are all good choppers at modest prices. I personally like the two Condors. I also own the Cutlass Machete which I don't generally use. Folks over at the Becker forum love the BK-9. I think they can build a log cabin with it.

The more I read these threads, the more I am convinced that there are only two kinds of knife people:

Those who pry with their knives, if the situation dictates, and those who think a knife should never ever be used to pry anything at anytime ever and only specific tools should be used for specific tasks. I'm pretty sure the second group color codes their underwear. :)

Scrap Yard Knives 1111; that is a cool one if you can afford it. Can't tell if it comes with a sheath or not.

Well, the Becker BK-2 is a tank with its 1/4" thick blade, so it can accept use and abuse.

Its like a divers knife but for ground use.
