I am ready to buy a drill press and I found a used multi purpose machine for sale. It is a harbor freight 5980-2vga mill/drill/lathe. Has anybody used this or know how good it is? The guy has a 20 pc. end mill set and some other acc. Do you think I would be better off with this or a good drill press?
Thanks, Joe

my advice....buy a good drill press....get a used lathe.....and a good used milling machine...you will be MUCH happier in the long run and will have what you really need, not something that sorta does what you want.

I probably should have mentioned that he only wants $500.00 for it. What advantages does a good drill press have over this machine?
Thanks again, Joe

Hello,

BUy the machine!!!! they work just fine and for 500.00 its a pretty good deal with all the tooling you mentioned with it.

Dont listen to TOM, he is from Hawaii and gets confused easilly,,,,lmao!! 8-)

Regards,,, Allen

He's asking too much, even with the extras. The new machine is only $729 and Harbor Freight had them on sale not long ago for $549.

yea...dont listen to me....I told one very well known knifemaker not to get one....and a year later he told me I was right...it was a big waste of money....then another very well known one who lives near me got one against my advice and now he wants to throw it in the trash...maybe you could get it from him......but dont listen to me...i dont know what im talking about....go ahead and buy it....and then in about 10 years get the drill press and lathe and mill like you should have in the first place....

Its your life.

Thanks for your replies. I am going to get a delta drill press, I'm just trying to decide on the 16 1/2" or the 20".

in metal machines bigger is always better-they are more rigid...if money is not a problem get the variable speed machine... I just got a 20" and wish id spent the extra money on a variable speed......it is a wonderful feature on ANY machine (have one on my metal bandsaw, one of my 2x72 grinders, on my disc sander, and on my south bend...I LOVE variable speed motors!)

Does Delta make a 20" drill press with a variable speed motor? I looked in Tool Crib's web site and only found the 16 1/2" with a variable motor.
