Multi tool for kayak fishing in ocean

Hi all, I do a LOT of fishing in the ocean out of my kayak. I always carry at least one of my spyderco salt knives, but recently I was thinking it would be nice to have a good multi tool to carry. That would be its primary purpose, but it would also be an around the house "do everything" tool. I was recently looking at the leatherman wave and I like the tool set and form of that one. My main concern is corrosion. I read some reviews that said that one is not very corrosion resistant. I realize that nobody is going to make a multi tool that I can treat like my h1 salts, but given that I plan to use it on the saltwater, something that is relatively corrosion resistant would be a plus. Any suggestions?

P.S. I saw that the wave comes in a coated black too. Any chance of that one being more "rust proof" in a salt environment.

I think your best chance of rust resistance in repeated salt water dunking is anything from Victorinox. I'd still wipe it down with tuf-glide or similar occasionally.

Hmm... this is a tough one. There isn't a multitool out there that I like better than the leatherman wave. That being said, the black oxidized version looks interesting but I'm not sure how its internals would hold up.

I say go with the black wave and keep it in check once in a while (internals) by spraying oil. If you're gonna just gonna have one kept in the kayak, I'd sling a small pelican case with my keys, phone and anything I wouldn't want to get wet. Throwing a multitool in there actually ain't a bad idea.

heck yes the Swiss army one is in the bag. I had that one. left it in the rain. never clean it up. dirt all over it. put it in the sink and ran water over it and never one spot of rust on it.

Yeah, I just like the look and tool set of that wave. Any idea if the black would be any more corrosion resistant?

I think I'll get one and just spray a little oil on it after every trip. It will get some spots, but it will be fine. I've got some carbon steel pliers I never take out of the kayak. They have some rust but I wd40 them once a week and they work just fine. I don't think I would be OCD about rust on a multi tool like I am with my knives.

Swisstool Spirit. I have collected a dozen of LM and Victorinox MT, so far from my own experience and reading, LM is a lot more prone to rust than Victorinox.

I don't have much experience with Black oxide Wave/Charge will be that much more resistant to corrosion. But personally, rust spot on blade was never a real concern except when it starting to rust at the joint it becomes a pain and I am not too sure LM joints are that rust proof.

My regular wave is still going very strong, so I haven't had a reason to pick up the black version. My hunch is that it's powdercoated, which wouldn't take long to wear off. That being said, I don't think it'll instantly turn to orange dust on your first outing with it :p.
