I have never owned a Multi Tool and thought it was about time. I have more knives than I can count (and yes I graduated school):D More woodworking tools then Norm Abram and enough metal working tools to start a machine shop. I always wanted a multi tool but never got around to buying one.

I looked at several and narrowed it down to these three, Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit, the Gerber LEGEND MULTI PLIER 800 and the Leatherman 831102 Super. I just want something to carry around the house, keep in the car ect... Is anyone of these better, or does anyone have recommendations for another model.

Thanks in Advance.

I would say out of your three you have a clear winner in my book. The Victorinox Swisstool Spirit (X model) is what I would choose. They are excellent tools and made extremely well.

My vote as well. I owned a leatherman surge and wave and got rid of both. I cannot see myself ever selling my Spirit. I carry it everyday and use it much more than my knife. I am working on a new work and home edc system and thinking I might buy a full size swisstool. I would use my full size for work and the spirit for after work/ weekend carry. Hope this helps!

Then why not get one for both? The Super Tool 300 is a fine tool, and it's easily possible to pick one up new/like new condition off Ebay for a good price. Then get it's medium sized brother, the Rebar off Ebay for new/like new.

This is not knocking the Swiss Spirit. Just it will cost you as much as two tools.

I really like the leatherman rebar, American made tool with the replaceable plier cutters, or I really did like it till left it in my bag going through TSA and it ended up in the contraband bucket, however I must admit they were shocking friendly about it, guess good thing was not my SigP938 which I did remember to remove.

The swisstool will have the best fit and finish, nicest polish and some of the best stainless you can find anywhere, hands down. But the price-tag is the compromise. The supertool is fantastic and so is Leatherman's service and warranty department. But they are a tool, and the edges are not quite as nice as the Vic. Good value, though.
No idea on the Gerber, but if there is one to get, that'd be the one.

Depends on what you like. you won't go wrong with any of them. you may find that you might want a smaller tool for everyday belt or pocket carry, but you might find you like the big one. Like other pocket knives, you gotta learn what fits your groove.

I am a Leatherman guy. I love Victorinox knives and own quite a few, but when I want a plier based tool I like the Leatherman.

The Leatherman Wave would not disappoint, and I think it has some advantages over the Supertool.

I still carry my PST on occasion and find it dated yet still useful.

I suggest the Leatherman supertool 300. I have one of these tools and it is fantastic

Thanks for the response guys, I might take raistlin65's advice and get two! Guess I started another addiction.

Of those you mentioned, I have experience only with the Swisstool Spirit and Super Tool 300. They are both great multi-tools, but can't really be compared because of weight and size differences. The Spirit is smaller and weighs less, although can punch well above its class, while the ST 300 is more of a heavy duty item, although it's fine for smaller tasks. Now, I believe in preparing for the tougher jobs because on the whole, more than you need is less of an issue than not enough. Therefore, I am more inclined to the ST 300. But others could decide that ease of carry suits them better, and that an MT that can tackle most chores is plenty enough for them. Such persons might prefer a Spirit. My advice would be to get both, work with each to find which fits best, and sell off the other. Better yet, keep both and find out what kind of person you really are. It's a voyage of self discovery :tranquillity: .

It's a good way to go. As soon as you get one good MT, you'll want one to keep in the car and have one to carry. And then maybe later on another to keep in the wife's car. And then you'll want one for pocket carry vs. a heavier duty model that can handle tougher tasks. Which is why I suggested the Rebar and the ST300 so as to get you started ;)

Know that both the Rebar and the ST300 have replaceable wire cutter blades if you think you might use that feature a lot. Also, since Leatherman has a good 25 year warranty, you could go for a used one that needs a little cleaning up. If something was actually wrong with it, you could send it in for a warranty exchange. So no real risk in going with used.

Now, if you really want to get into the MT obsession, you can hang out in the MT forum here and over at multitool.org. You can probably learn everything you need to know from these two places.

NOTE: I edited the prices out of my other post because I forgot we aren't supposed to list prices on BF.

I love my Leatherman Rebar, the Super Tool 300 is the bigger, badder, brother.

I've owned a little over a dozen different SAKs and plier-based MTs (which is not many compared to some people). Just recently got into the Rebar and ST300. They are definitely my favorite.

Thanks raistlin65,

I think I'm going with the Rebar and the Vic Swiss to start, I can see this is already turning into an addiction.

Thanks to everyone else for their input.

Just ordered both, I'll let you know what I think when they arrive.

Just a heads up kcub, you can't deal spot here, unless the company pays to advertize on Blade Forums. You'll end up getting an infraction by moderators, and they don't expire for a long time!. :(
