M - I have both the Multi-tool II with the 8" contact wheel and the Griz. I like both machines. Some things to consider : The Multi -tool attachment runs at 3540rpm off a 1hp Jet grinder. The Griz runs at 1750. I feel that the Multi tool hollow grinds very nicely as does the Griz. However, because of the Multi-tool's higher speeds, I do my most of my post heat treat grinding on the lower speed griz - less chance of burning the blade. The higher speed of the Multi tool does make profiling go a little faster. The Griz is definately easier to work with once you change to 10" wheel ($59.00 extra) otherwise the motor gets in the way. The multi tool can be used for flat grinding, but it is a real hassle to change it. The griz does both, though I feel that flat grinding would be easier with the mods suggested by Brome McCreary (see next pargraph). It doen't hurt that the folks at Griz are real nice.
The Griz responds well to a full tune-up, which it really needs. It does not track for beans, especially when slack belting or putting the pressure on when profiling. The flat platten also needs to be replaced (pyroceram would be the way to go). I am going to also modify mine per Brome McCrearys method (see on his site -
http://www.redacorn.org/brome/ Bottom line, I like the Griz, and use it a lot, but will like it a lot better when I have tuned it up. At this point I feel the Multi-tool is more refined and a little easier to work on.
If your wondering why I didn't buy a one of Rob Frinks basic models for what I spent.. well, I have another busines and having more than one grinder suits my needs at this time...(& I also have my sights on one of Ron's Machines).
If you decide on the multi -tool, let me know as I can steer you to where the Jet 1hp grinder ( to drive this ) can be had for 129.95 + shipping.
