I remember hearing about the Multi Tool grinding attatchment a while back. This thing mounts on a bench grinder and works pretty good.I also heard a larger version was going to be available in the U.S. soon. It uses a larger contact wheel than the 362 model . Has anyone tried this one and if so where could I buy one? I know Koval, and Texas knifemaker supply carries the small one but I need to locate the bigger one. Thanks for any help!!!

M - I have both the Multi-tool II with the 8" contact wheel and the Griz. I like both machines. Some things to consider : The Multi -tool attachment runs at 3540rpm off a 1hp Jet grinder. The Griz runs at 1750. I feel that the Multi tool hollow grinds very nicely as does the Griz. However, because of the Multi-tool's higher speeds, I do my most of my post heat treat grinding on the lower speed griz - less chance of burning the blade. The higher speed of the Multi tool does make profiling go a little faster. The Griz is definately easier to work with once you change to 10" wheel ($59.00 extra) otherwise the motor gets in the way. The multi tool can be used for flat grinding, but it is a real hassle to change it. The griz does both, though I feel that flat grinding would be easier with the mods suggested by Brome McCreary (see next pargraph). It doen't hurt that the folks at Griz are real nice.

The Griz responds well to a full tune-up, which it really needs. It does not track for beans, especially when slack belting or putting the pressure on when profiling. The flat platten also needs to be replaced (pyroceram would be the way to go). I am going to also modify mine per Brome McCrearys method (see on his site - http://www.redacorn.org/brome/ Bottom line, I like the Griz, and use it a lot, but will like it a lot better when I have tuned it up. At this point I feel the Multi-tool is more refined and a little easier to work on.

If your wondering why I didn't buy a one of Rob Frinks basic models for what I spent.. well, I have another busines and having more than one grinder suits my needs at this time...(& I also have my sights on one of Ron's Machines).

If you decide on the multi -tool, let me know as I can steer you to where the Jet 1hp grinder ( to drive this ) can be had for 129.95 + shipping.

Thank you all for the info. Does the new 8" model only run off a one horse or will a half horse bench grinder power it? This will be set up in a van with the power source being a 3000 watt inverter that cant start a one horse motor. I know I could go with the 362 model that my inverter could handle but I really want the larger contact wheel. Thanks again ! Dave

M - As long as the shaft on the motor will fit the Multi-tool attachment, it would probably work . I would give TKS or Koval a call and ask them, too. They would probably advise you to go with the 1hp, but given you special circumstance, I think they would understand and could advise you on the fit. One good thing is that a 1/2 hp motor will cost a lot less. I will most likely work ok, though I can tell you that it will not be the optimal power setup for the attachment, that is - it might have a tendency to bog down at times.

I only have a multitool thing and it does fine. I get the belts custom made for me here (otherwise only al ox from the shops here). The attachment should have enough fittings to mate to "any" grinder or motor. Not bad for the $ until you can get a real grinder.

I grind all of my blades on a Multi-Tool. I have the first one, and I use it to flatgrind. I added an extension to the arm to allow it to run 2"x72" belts. I also made a new platen which is 2" wide. The platon that came with the grinder was about 2&1/4", which caused some problems while grinding with the 2" belts.
