Well, I know this probably isn't the proper place for it, but in an earlier post as to what the trigger-puller types carried knife-wise into combat, everyone mentioned a multi-tool.

Me being a street-cop, I probably won't be needing a D-9 or an MT anytime soon for survival situations...although I'd probably carry one if the city council would let us. I do, however, have a great need for a multi-tool. What does everyone prefer for use in this regard?

I'm partial to the Leatherman Wave, but it's probably an emotional thing since my first Leatherman was a gift from my grandfather many moons ago, so I'm kind of attached.

Later,

Eric

Eric,

I too would go for Leatherman, altough I prefer the original Supertool, not the Supertool 200. Has about the same thingies as the wave (except scissors, but hey, with two razor sharp blades, who needs tiny scissors..), but, even though it isn't much bigger, has a more bulky feel to it during use than the wave does, which I like.

Matter of personal prefference though..

I've used the Leatherman, Gerber, and Victorinox multi-tools while at work. I've broken 2 leatherman tool's, one gerber, and not even scratched the Victorinox. By far it is leaps and bounds ahead of either the other two. Nothing else comes close. Truly worthy of a Strider user. It is stronger, more user friendly, and comes with all kinds of goodies. Everything else is child's toys.

It's a bit larger and heavier than the rest of them, but like KnifeBomber said, "nothing else comes close". I, too, have broken a Leatherman (a PST II). Actually, it was only the needlenose pliers - the other tools were still usable. But aren't the pliers one of the main reasons to buy a multitool (for instance, over a SAK)??? If it weren't for the pliers, I'd rather carry my SAK Rucksak.

Ryan,

Of course you've broken the others. A 200 ft drop to the deck out of the gun port of a Blackhawk will break most anything....

Ya, I might not post much, but I've been lurking a loooooooonng time.

:D  :D

Stay low,

Eric

Another vote for the Swisstool. I like the leatherman wave but I have broken both a Super tool and the PST(I did abuse them pretty bad). The swisstool on the other hand seems indestructable so far.

I'm curious...what "broke" on your SwissTool? Now, I'll be the first to admit...I probably don't use my SwissTool as hard as some you guys, but I do put it through its paces. The only concern I ever had with the SwissTool was when I first got it - I just didn't know if the lock was going to hold up. Needless to say, after two years of constant use, all my concerns are gone...

Squid, reread that. I don't think he's broken anything on it yet!

I like the Wave and Swisstool. However, I find the more pocketable Victorinox Swiss Army Knife a better, all around tool. Especially for us that don't use the pliers as often. My personal favorite is the Swisschamp. I've had one for many years, and always return to it. Plus, if it doesn't have the tool you need, you can improvise with another tool. They are very well thought out.

Just my opinion of course.

I personally can't imagine breaking my Leatherman ST200. This thing is solid.

When I was shopping for my first multi-tool about 6 months ago, I was asking around. I hadn't heard anyone mentioning breaking a Leatherman before. I didn't hear anyone mention breaking a Swisstool, either. But one particular forumite who had owned many kinds ot multi-tools told me to stay away from the SwissTool because the screwdrivers were too soft. He said they would just get turned in the screw slots. I also read a review on some website that said the hard wire cutters were not that hard.

My brother-in-law has a SwissTool, and I took a look at it. It looks bulky and thick, like a well made tool, but it also looks like die-cast metal. Kinda soft and shiny.

I suppose overall they are pretty rugged, like the pliers, but I would be suspect of the torquing tools.

I'll second the Swisschamp. I really don't use plyers much at all. I've had my Swisschamp for 20 years (bought it in Alaska in 1982) and just bought my second one this past week. They are AWESOME. I think that a magnifying glass is beneficial from the standpoint that I can start a fire with it if need be. And I've used just about every other instrument on the knife. My new one is black, to go with my new BT ;) .

I can picture the Striderguys working a for weeks with magnifying glasses to grind 20+ little pieces of BG-42 into odd shapes to make just one Strider multi-tool.

It would be tough, never break, cost $$$ and drive them all into early insanity... and they would still get calls of "where's my MT?" ... "do you have any AR's available?"...

Funny that the Swisstools get so many votes here..

I've never handled one, but than I am one of those guys that will upgrade even when the previous whatever isn't broken yet, and though I am pretty happy with my Leatherman Supertool, as described above, I think I'll check one of them Swiss' out one of these days..

Do they have a hex-bit? That's the only thing I really miss on my ST.

Christiaan.
