A question:

In general, would a multi-tool, such as a Leatherman, Gerber, Schrade, etc. be considered a "Knife"? Most of these tools contain a "knife" blade but are more multi-use utility tools than knives.

It seems that often a multi-tool will pass muster in a situation where a knife, even a small "ordinary" pocketknife might not.

Any opinions?

Thanks.

Whether or not a multi-tool would be considered a knife depends on who finds it on who, and in what context. If your job has a "no weapons" policy, you could probably get away with a multi-tool because, even though it has a knife blade in it, it is made to be a tool, and wouldn't make a very good weapon, and because it looks more like a tool than a weapon. If you are at an elementary school, however, the school administration would probably see it as a "knife," and react accordingly. Most people have had pretty good luck bringing multi-tools on airplanes, even when knives were not allowed. IIRC there was a case a while back in CA where a man was found with a multi-tool in a post office, and the court had to decide whether or not it was a deadly weapon - I don't know how it turned out. So, in most situations where a knife would be questioned, a multi-tool would fare better, but there are probably some cases where even a multi-tool would be seen as a knife and treated like a weapon. YMMV

I have been suspended for having a 3" lockblade at school, as my pocketknife. My sypderco Delica is my daily carry...
However, I am allowed a multi-tool with a 3" blade. No questions asked and it's completely visable to anyone pasing me in the hall.
