Hi guys dont post much outside the rat forum but I'm in the market for a medium sized multi tool and was hoping for some advice

the two i'm looking closest at are the Victorinox spirit and the SOG Pocket power Plier anyone have any advice re these or other suggestions

more interested in the quality of the tool and plyers rather than the blade as I also carry an ALOX SAK soldier, a friction folder and when I can (UK laws) an Izula or a BR PSK

I highly recommend the Spirit. I have had many of the other multitools, but it is the Spirit that I carry daily. The others have mostly been given or traded away, or sit unused in drawers.

The Spirit has great build quality, the tools are accessible without unfolding the pliers, and the array of tools is useful.

+1 on the Spirit. I have a Spirit X and it is the smoothest, most well designed and solid MT I own. I carry it just about every day. I try and pair mine up with an Alox soldier or pioneer and not only is that a great combo but it looks really classy. Good luck.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Spirit does have locking blades while the Pocket Power Pliers' don't. Perhaps something to keep in mind if you plan to EDC it.

The Spirit is certainly more refined but the PPP is nicely made in a robust and industrial kind of way. Oddly I'm not a huge fan of the compound leverage you get with the SOG due to the fact you have to open the handles very wide just to get the pliers to fit around a moderately sized nut (or whatever).

Get the Spirit, its got excellent build quality and a very nice assortment of tools including some of the best scissors on the market. Once you get a Victorinox youll know what the big deal is...Theyre fantastic MT's.

Thanks Gareth but it wont be edc but its an important point

dont suppose the Spirit comes with a pocket clip option?

I just aquired a SOG Powerlock but haven't had a chance to use it yet. One thing I really like is the fact that you can disassemble it and customize it. I've already ordered the wire stripper attachment to replace the blade. Who among us needs a blade on a multitool anyhow? The compound leverage system is really cool but as I said, no hard use yet. I plan to give it a workout but I'm still on vacation and livin the life of Reilly. :p

I like the old Leatherman Wave but since I'm boycotting them I haven't bought anything more recent than that model. Love that diamond file. I wish SOG offered a diamond file. I also had a Swisstool Spirit. Great multitool but it also lacks a diamond file and the ability to swap out tools.

I don't really think a fellow can go wrong with what's currently out there (in the American made offerings). All have their strengths and weaknesses. None of them have the utility that a dedicated tool has but who is gonna carry a pair of pliers, a file, a saw, an awl, etc all seperately?

now that sounds like a perfect idea - means i dont have to worry about our crazy EDC laws either

Unfortunately no, but some people have had good results with a Clipdraw pocket clip like this one.

Intended for pistols they simply stick on with a very strong adhesive tape. Here is a pretty good thread and pics as to how it works and what it looks like.
