I am a street cop so I have used my black Surge a metric ton of times on the job. Everything from taking stolen plates off of cars to cutting damaged body parts off of cars at wrecks to cutting wires to .....well, you get the idea.
A year or two ago I was dispatched to a call of a burglary in progress. A woman came to check on her parent's house (they were in a nursing home) and the little chain on the door was latched. She knew she didn't leave it that way the last time she was there.
I get there along with a buddy of mine who is on the SWAT team. He was itching to kick that door in....bad. He is all about the "rake and break" methods of forced entry. Our department is known for handing out swift punishment if a citizen or complainant wants a door kicked in and then once it is done, turns around and sues the city. Needless to say, I don't kick in doors all that often anymore.
So just before he kicks that door I grab him and pull him back. I whipped out the Surge, opened the door while he and another officer did what they could to cover me, and slipped it in the narrow opening. I got the chain between the hardened wire cutters and made short work of slicing through it. The door opened, we stormed the house, and found the bad guy in a bedroom. Took him down, cleared the rest of the house, and started the paperwork and investigator notification process.
I was ready for the complaint over the door chain to roll in and was ready to go buy one and install it but that never materialized. Luckily the complainant was good to her word that she would take care of the door chain and was thankful that we didn't destroy her door, lock, and jamb.
Great tool that Surge. A bit heavy but goes well on a Sam Brown gunbelt. Hardly notice it there but am always thankful to reach back there and deploy it when it is needed. Most of the guys here carry one in their car or bag but having it on the belt is very handy.
Regards.
