So during my Eagle Court of Honor today, I received a Leatherman Super Tool 300 and looking at the beefiness got me wondering. What are some of your "Glad I had my XYZ Multitool" stories? Doesn't have to be life or death or any specific theme. I haven't had one long enough to have any riveting stories yet.

By the way, I'm not sure about that link being okay or not, so if not, sorry mods.

I'm happy to have mine when I need it and am too lazy to go find a better tool. :D

I'm not sure of any exact stories but I know it has been handy making times over.

We were on a guys trip a few years ago, out in the middle of nowhere headed back to town late at night when the headlight dimmer switch in my uncle's vehicle broke. We used my Leatherman PST to connect the headlight wires together so we would have lights and we could make it back to town.

I am a street cop so I have used my black Surge a metric ton of times on the job. Everything from taking stolen plates off of cars to cutting damaged body parts off of cars at wrecks to cutting wires to .....well, you get the idea.

A year or two ago I was dispatched to a call of a burglary in progress. A woman came to check on her parent's house (they were in a nursing home) and the little chain on the door was latched. She knew she didn't leave it that way the last time she was there.

I get there along with a buddy of mine who is on the SWAT team. He was itching to kick that door in....bad. He is all about the "rake and break" methods of forced entry. Our department is known for handing out swift punishment if a citizen or complainant wants a door kicked in and then once it is done, turns around and sues the city. Needless to say, I don't kick in doors all that often anymore.

So just before he kicks that door I grab him and pull him back. I whipped out the Surge, opened the door while he and another officer did what they could to cover me, and slipped it in the narrow opening. I got the chain between the hardened wire cutters and made short work of slicing through it. The door opened, we stormed the house, and found the bad guy in a bedroom. Took him down, cleared the rest of the house, and started the paperwork and investigator notification process.

I was ready for the complaint over the door chain to roll in and was ready to go buy one and install it but that never materialized. Luckily the complainant was good to her word that she would take care of the door chain and was thankful that we didn't destroy her door, lock, and jamb.

Great tool that Surge. A bit heavy but goes well on a Sam Brown gunbelt. Hardly notice it there but am always thankful to reach back there and deploy it when it is needed. Most of the guys here carry one in their car or bag but having it on the belt is very handy.

Regards.

So during my Eagle Court of Honor today,

Congratulations. That's no small accomplishment.

I count my old Victorinox Huntsman as a multitool, and I've carried one or had one close at hand for at least fifteen years or more. I can't begin to count all the things that SAK has done.

As far as dedicated pliers-type multitools, I used the pliers on my Surge to install a hook in the ceiling to anchor our Christmas tree one year; used the Surge a lot when camping to lift pot lids, pull up tent stakes, make fuzz sticks, etc. Used my Gerber 600 to partially dis-assemble my old Finnish Model 39 rifle while at the range one day, because I left my tools at home.

Recently I used my Leatherman Blast to replace the bulb in a mini van head light. Pretty crazy, huh?

lwt210, that's really neat. Good to hear it all worked out.

Chris, thanks! I'm pretty proud of it. It seems the Phillips head on my blast fits a ton of screws I never would have guessed. I only tried them out of necessity with positive results.

znapschatz, that's great. I've had a couple friends mention nitnoid things they've been able to work around because they keep one in their car or the like.

Knife Crazed, I'd agree with you, it's just one of those things that are helpful to have around.

My son plays hockey and we were at a tournament this past weekend. One of the players on his team received a new composite stick but had failed to cut it down to the correct size. It's 15 minutes before game time and the coach realizes the kid is using a stick that is way too big for him. A mad scramble for a saw ensues with no luck. I mention that I have my Leatherman on me and there is a saw in it (I'm carrying a Leatherman Rebar).

We tape the stick at the correct height to prevent splintering, and off we go. I was very surprised how well the saw did on the composite material of the stick. Sort of a lightweight metallic compound of some sort. It sawed through it very cleanly, and we then used the file attachment to smooth it out before replacing the butt end.

I inspected the saw, unsure as to what I would find. Pleasantly surprised that there was absolutely no damage to the blade, and the serrations are as toothy/ sharp as ever.

Great tool, and it reaffirms my belief in "It's better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it."

The first time I used a corkscrew it was on the Juice XE6. I thought I was going to get some that night, but we ended up just drinking wine :(

your multitool was too small.............now if you had a supertool!!!!!!

I don't have any exciting or special multi tool stories but i do own a Leatherman skeeltool and a skeeltool cx and a Leatherman micra and when i have needed them those tools have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

First, congradulations are in order, well done.
My multi tool story is i had just installed a new radiator in my car 2 days before a 800 mile plus road trip. The hose going to the engine came off of it a few miles out side a small town, i nursed and coxed my car there, bought a few gallons of water and was able to reattach the hose and finish up my trip. not life or death but sure saved me from a head ache.
