Multitool w/ no blade or scissors please

Now that no blades or scissors are allowed on flights, etc - I think there would be a good market for a solid multitool that doesn't contain banned tools.

I would have found a bottle opener invaluable on my last flight. Pliers, file, saw, screw driver shouldn't pose a problem I would think.

If anyone knows of one please let me know.

If a manufacturer has one in the works that would be nice to know as well.

I would bet big bucks that they wouldn't even allow you on with that. My mom-in-law recently had to re-pack her hair brush from carry-on into her checked bags because they said the handle was too pointy and could be used as a weapon. I sh^t you not.

Personally, I have no problem at all flying bladeless. It'll only be a problem for me when I take do a short trip and only bring a carry-on bag. When that happens, it's either an excuse to buy another knife, or I'll mail a blade ahead to my destination if possible.

If you're going oversees, you could actually send a knife to yourself at a local post office, addressed "Poste Restante — your name and then the post office's full address. Just show up at the post office with an ID to claim the package. This takes a little pre-trip research though, and it'd seem like more fun to just buy a local knife (not to mention the very real threat that your knife could get "lost" in the mail).

Any multitool with a saw would fall under the same restrictions as serrations on a blade. Some "expert" once told the airlines that serrations or sawteeth could cut through the fuselage and crash the plane.

Don't worry about having only one bag when you fly, once they ban all carry-on, you'll have no choice but to check it.

Why would you need screw drivers, pliers, or a saw? I'm not saying that you would never need any of those things, I'm just saying that people generally don't need those types of tools on planes.

Jeff

I'm fairly certain that restriction likely include even a tool without a blade or saw.

Warning...Quick SOG plug: Our tools allow for removal and replacement of all tool components for personalization (including knife and saw removal). Plug over.

I saw a few multi-tool type things at EMS (an "outdoor" kind of store) and at a bike store. No blades, but screwdrivers, allen wrenches, etc., aimed at the traveling cyclist.

It's a good bet they won't allow these on a plane, though. I had to throw out a sample I had, that had a removable metal piece that was somewhat shaped like a knitting needle. So don't bring anything you can't afford to lose :-(

If you can't get tweezers or nailclippers on a flight, you sure as hell aren't going to be flying with those "assault pliers".:D

The more I read through the replies, the more I am realizing that any type of multi-tool (blade or no blade) would probably be subject to confiscation. Even if it wasn't confiscated, it wouldn't be too useful as a tool by the time it was deemed 'plane legal'.

rt014, you're not alone worring about a multi tool on planes or in schools. I just recently
e-mailed Leatherman to ask about the adding a spike to the supertool for rope work and
found out that Leatherman's engineers are working on a bladeless tool that can be carried
in schools. Now that the terrorist have really mucked things up they are unsure how to
proceed with tool development. I personally would welcome a bladeless tool ,but, I don't
think it's gona matter much anymore.

I sent an email to Leatherman as well and found out the same thing. The AKTI needs a larger budget, read more members, so that knife people will have some of the clout that the NRA has...although now I'm not sure how much good it would do.:( At least with a tool with no knife blade you could make the argument that it was just for repair work:rolleyes:

JohnG, I used to stop by EMS in two locations in NYC and one up in Westchester, and never seemed to get out for less than $75 bucks. Their prices can be pretty stiff, but something or other is always on sale. I love it!

Considering how clumsy it is to get the knife blades out on most multitools, and how a poor a blade they generally give you, and how many of us carry truly fine knives for cutting anyway, we'd be better off with one more tool instead. SOG has the right idea. Someone else allows you to build your own combination of tools, also. Buck?

Esav,

I only mentioned EMS cause I have one close at hand. They are usually very pricey--I only buy from one when I can't get up in your neck of the woods and go to Campmor or Ramsey Outdoor :)

REI is a great store, too, but as far as I can tell they have only one store in the greater Jersey area, out near Plymouth Meeting PA....
